You can do the hike on your own, but you may encounter "toll areas" for unaccompanied tourists. It is therefore preferable to do it with a guide, as this contributes to the local community and is inexpensive (allow £30 per person, including breakfast).
Bring a hat, water, sunglasses, sunscreen, walking shoes and hiking poles.
Bring a mobile phone with Visorando software so you can track your GPS route, plus a spare battery.
Other starting points and routes are possible.
The only downside is the large number of flies in the area, which will follow you throughout the walk.
If you go with a guide, they will take you to the starting point, accompany you, and bring you back to your home.
If you go on your own, you will need to find somewhere to park.
Climb Mount Batur (with a guide), recommended departure time is around 4 a.m. to enjoy the sunrise at the summit of the volcano at 6 a.m. It's a 600-metre climb, not too difficult. Magnificent panorama at the summit, with Lake Batur on one side and the volcano's crater opening to the south on the other. Bring coffee/tea and snacks for lunch at the summit (1,700 metres), then walk along the ridge of the volcano and descend gently on the other side, ending with a walk through a pretty forest. Arriving at a different location from where we started, two scooters were waiting to take us back to the starting point. It is possible to take another path down through the forest to get closer to the starting point and walk back.
