Regarding the difficulty of the hike: see § practical information
(S/E) From the Chasteuil car park, walk up to the small village along the quiet road and cross it.
(1) Take the path that descends parallel to the farm.GR®4.
(2) Pass in front of the fountain and the pumping station.GR®4.
(3) Colle Basse crossroads. Turn left onto the small path that climbs north-northeast. Leave theGR®4.
(4) Colle Basse, turn right towards the summit of Pré Chauvin to the north-northeast. No markings. Follow the cairns.
(5) Pré Chauvin summit, turn right onto the Crête du Pas du Loup heading due east.
(6) Pas du Loup. Continue on the path that leaves the ridge and goes through the woods.
(7) Cross the entire field (no difficulty) by climbing to the right, before the altitude 1493, heading south. You will arrive at a small path higher up, which you should take heading west to reach a natural viewpoint.
(8) Belvédère des Cadières. Take the path in the other direction, turn right and walk along Les Cadières. Pass through rocky terrain before rejoining thePR® at the crossroads below.
(9) At the intersection, take thePR® on the right, heading north-east.
(10) After the pylons, take the path that descends towards the small cemetery of Villars Brandis to the south.
(11) Fork in the path. Cemetery on your left, continue right on thePR® heading south-west.
(12) At altitude 1046, turn left onto the path marked by a cairn that descends towards theGR®4. This is a little-used descent with fairly dense vegetation, and the path is difficult to walk down due to advanced erosion.
(13) Return to theGR®4, an old Roman road, turning right to the north-west.
(14) At the oratory, just before altitude 979, turn left towards the small chapel perched a little further on its rocky outcrop.
(15) St-Jean Chapel. Turn around and return to the oratory.
(14) Turn left onto theGR®4trail and continue to the Colle Basse crossroads.
(3) Take the path you came on to return to the car park (S/E).
This is a moderately long hike, but it is suitable for experienced and trained hikers.
