Belfort - Bas Évette

This hike is the first stage of the GRP® - Randonnée des Forts. Starting from Belfort, this long hike takes in two of them, the Citadel of Belfort and the Fort of Giromagny. There are also numerous ponds and lakes, such as the Étang des Forges, the Étangs Lagace, the Étangs de la Charbonnière, the Étang d'Amont, the Étang d'Avau and those in the Malsaucy Nature Reserve. The first part, from Belfort to Fort de Giromagny, is mainly forest. After the fort, the hike becomes even more enjoyable with landscapes interspersed with numerous lakes, the last of which, Lac du Malsaucy, gave its name to the nature reserve of the same name. Of course, don't hesitate to stay longer in Belfort to admire the historical monuments.

Description of the walk

Start the hike at Belfort Ville station.

Red rectangle markings

(S) From the station, take Rue Adolphe Thiers opposite and continue straight on to La Savoureuse.

No markings

(1) Cross it and continue straight ahead, ignoring the junction with Quai Léon Schwob. At the second junction, turn left onto Avenue du Général Sarrall.

Yellow and red markings for the GRP® Randonnée des Forts

Follow the second right, Avenue du Général Sarrall, to arrive at the foot of the Lion de Belfort.

(2) Continue straight ahead on the same street. Walk along the square on the right and pass on the left in front of Saint-Christophe Cathedral. Continue on Rue du Quai. After the fortifications, turn left onto Rue sous le Rempart, then turn right onto Avenue de l'Espérance and continue to the roundabout.

(3) Take the pedestrian crossing that cuts across the roundabout. On the other side, turn left, then right onto the greenway to go up the Savoureuse. Continue to the second path on the right.

(4) Take this road towards the Étang des Forges. When you reach Avenue Jean Moulin, go up this road on the left before turning right onto Rue de Marseille. Follow this street and continue to the Étang des Forges.

(5) In front of the pond, turn left. Stay along the pond until you reach the jetty on the right. Continue straight ahead, then turn left towards Le Martinet. Then continue on the right to reach Allée des Charmilles.

(6) Turn left, then go up Rue Charles de Gaulle on the right until you reach the end. Turn right onto Rue Aristide Briand until you reach the roundabout.

(7) Take the left exit. The markings on IGN maps are obsolete at this point. After the cemetery, turn left into the forest. Turn 90° to the right, then leave a path on the right. Leave a discreet path on the left and reach a clearing in the forest.

(8) Turn right and leave the more or less abandoned paths on the left until you are completely in the forest. Once in the forest, turn left. Leave one intersection on the right and one on the left. Keep going until you reach the crossroads at the top of the hill.

(9) Turn right, then left. Pass a path on the left, then another on the right and two more on the left to reach the Lagace ponds.

(10) Pass between two of these ponds and turn left. Pass the private property on your left to stay on the same side of the pond. Pass a path on your right before turning right at the last pond. Ignore a fork coming from the right and another coming from the left to reach a crossroads.

(11) Leave the path on the right, then the next one. Cross a wet section over wooden logs. Leave two paths on the right to cross a stream and arrive at a pond.

(12) Continue straight ahead. At the crossroads, follow the path that climbs to the left. Do not take the path that veers to the right. Further on, ignore another path on the right to reach the summit of Piton d'Éloie.

(13) Keep to the left. At the fork, continue downhill to Rue d'Offemont. Go down this road on the left and cross a stream. At Grande Rue, turn left, pass in front of a car park and reach La Rosemontoise.

(14) At the fork after the stream, go up Rue de Sermamagny on the right. You will reach a crossroads after the bend.

(15) Take the track that starts on the right between the two paths. Ignore all the crossroads until you reach the barrier. Continue on the same track until you see the sign for Étang Collin on the right, ignoring the intersections on the right and left.

(16) Keep to the left. Then continue straight ahead until you reach the road. Turn right towards the D24. Turn left onto this road to reach La Savoureuse.

(17) Cross it, continue for a few metres and turn right into the cul-de-sac, which continues along a small path. Cross a stream and go up to the right along Grande Rue. Turn left and continue to the end of the next bend.

(18) Turn left onto Rue des Oiseaux. Continue straight ahead until you reach the old railway line that led to Giromagny. After the level crossing, turn right immediately to stay on Rue des Oiseaux. After a left turn, turn right and you will reach a sports field.

(19) Continue straight ahead. Pass a path on your left. At the "Charnier de Bellevue" sign, start climbing straight ahead. Pass two forks on your left and one on your right to reach the Red Rectangle fork leading to Giromagny.

(20) Turn left. At the pass, go right and continue climbing straight ahead until you reach some ruins. Then go left to reach the Fort de Giromagny.

(21) Pass in front of the fort, leaving the GR®5 coming from the right. At a wide bend, descend to the left. Pass a path on the left, then another path on the left and a final one on the right to approach the pass again.

(22) Stay opposite on the same track. Ignore a path that descends to the right, then a second and third coming from the same side. Then leave a path coming from the left, then another wider path coming from the same side. Further on, leave an intersection on the right to exit the forest and arrive at an intersection with a path marked with a red triangle. Continue straight ahead until you reach the road.

(23) Follow this road towards Lachapelle-sous-Chaux. Leave it quickly for a path on the right at the first buildings. Leave two paths on the right to head towards the houses. Continue along Rue de la Prairie and reach Rue du Rhome.

(24) Turn right at a right angle. Pass a path on the right to cross the Rhôme. Keep going, pass the pond on the right and reach Rue de Bellevue. There is a bus shelter here.

(25) Turn left onto this street. At the fork, go straight ahead onto the path that descends towards the ponds. Pass a path on the right to reach the entrance to the Malsaucy Nature Reserve. At the Y-shaped fork ahead, take the right-hand branch to reach another Y-shaped fork.

(26) Continue straight ahead, then pass a path on the right, then a second one, and reach a crossroads with a viewing point.

(27) Stay along the pond on the right. When you reach the road, follow the path along the pond. Then head to the end of the car park to reach a platform on the pond.

(28) Turn left, then continue straight ahead to Lac du Malsaucy. Walk along the lake to the restaurant at the far end. Turn left to reach Bas Évette station (E).
