Wimberry from Mile End

Starting at Mile End in the Forest of Dean visit the magical old quarries that have been reclaimed by nature. If you mooch about here you may find an old WW2 firing range used by the home guard. Continue down the valley where you may see old mines, then turn sharp right by a high old stone wall. The narrow path takes you back up to Perch Enclosure with magnificent pine trees. Take the loop around, past the old campsite and back onto the track where you started.

Description

(S/E) Start near the children's playground entering into the woods passing on the left side of the Lodge Inclosure.

(1) Turn sharp left just past the old campsite (Lodge Enclosure) onto a wide gravel track.

(2) Turn right down the muddy track. After about 200m, you'll see old quarries on the right - we used to call them Fairy Land! Between two of the quarries is an old firing range from WW2. About after another 50m, there is on the right an old stone arch which leads into an old quarry behind (it is now blocked). You may see old tram stones down this track.

(3) Turn sharp right up a single track by the high stone wall. You will pass a free mine halfway up.

(4) Turn left and see the magnificent pine trees. Do the loop and back to where your old campsite is. This last bit to the left on your return leg is the site of old WW2 buildings where I believe prisoners of war were kept, or possibly used by the US army. And back to your starting point.(S/E)
