(S) Exiting the White Lion, turn right and take the road towards Blackgang. As you leave the village, the road bends slightly to the left, with a sports field on the right. Immediately on the right at this point is a finger signpost NT52 to Blackgang. Gently ascending and skirting the edge of Niton Down, the path leads to a T junction with a tarmac path.
(1) Turn left and follow this down to the main road. At the main road, which can be busy so take care, turn right (the grass verge is quite wide) and after passing a field gate, on the opposite side of the road is a fingerpost C11 Blackgang. Go through this and head straight towards the cliff edge. The view towards your right, on a clear day, has Blackgang Chine below and you can see the whole of the west coast right up to Tennyson Down.
(2) However, we now turn left, where you will now be walking over Gore Cliff. There are spectacular views towards St Catherines lighthouse and the old road to Blackgang, which abruptly ends at a car park, following the massive landslip in 1928. The footpath down to St Catherines now has a closure notice on it, so carry on walking along the coast path, until reaching the main road. Turn right here and as the main road veers left, carry straight on along a narrow road which has a No Entry sign (one way for traffic). Shortly, on the left hand side, a fingerpost directs you to a descending path, which very quickly brings you alongside the Buddle Inn. (E)
