Great walk with a fantastic pub to start off with (and eat at). The walk itself has many options to make it longer or shorter or more challenging.

Perfect distance walk with a great starting/finishing point. The pub is friendly and even made us a pack lunch to take with. Be sure to check the opening times so you don’t go without food or drink if you want it! Beautiful countryside, great views and an easy trail. Ended up walking the trail backwards but that didn’t matter at all!

Good length walk over the south downs, obviously with ups and downs but well planned so no hills too challenging for mixed age/ability group. Interesting different terrain with lovely views from top of downs. There had been much rain prior to our walk, followed by snow and ice. Some areas, where protected from frost, very muddy - but only to be expected on winter walk. Snow and ice on the downs posed a risk of slipping, but again only to be expected. Visit to Shepherds church a must - it was decked out for Christmas, so beautiful we wondered if midnight mass held there (future planning) but sadly doesn’t seem so.

Major issues though with the section from grid ref SU815172, bridleway through woodland and subsequent sections into Treyford. The bridleway was almost impassible in some places because of fallen trees that had obviously been there for a long time - real limbo dancing needed, no route round. Whole of bridleway surprisingly narrow, full of fallen branches etc - looked little used - most of it not easy to walk. The subsequent sections into Treyford likewise looked little used and were waterlogged from overflowing stream.

This was a trial walk to check out viability for our walking group - concluded that the almost impassible bridleway is a no go. But there are other routes to bypass this so we’re going to try a couple very soon - disadvantage seen on map being that the descent is steeper and may be very chalky posing other challenges.
