Description

(S/E) From The Pack Horse' front entrance, turn left and walk down Watling Street, passing the chapel and the 30 mph speed limit signs.

Opposite the next house, take a footpath on the right and follow the field edge, which leads into a fenced farm track. Keep on down the left-hand side of the field to a gateway down to Hoyle’s Fold Farm.

(1) Walk through the farmyard and out to the road along the farm drive. Turn right and walk down Tottington road for a short distance, before turning right into a tarmac driveway opposite a bus stop.
Follow the driveway uphill and round to the left until you reach Top o’ the Knotts.

(2) Follow the road to the right of the first property, then pass an old farmhouse on the left (dated 1784) and then some newer houses on the right. When the road bends right, behind the houses, take a stone-walled track straight on. Follow this track to the next farm, Cromptons, where the official right-of-way leads through the farmyard but the de facto path skirts to the right.

(3) Beyond the farm, turn right up a grassy trackway that follows the power lines. At the end, climb a stile and walk up the field beyond, still following the telegraph poles. A further stile leads to a path that continues through a grassy meadow to Affetside Millennium Green. Having admired the village garden and the restored Affetside Cross, turn right to return to The Pack Horse. (S/E)
