Description

Park your car at Basset Cove car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head left to North Cliffs coastal path, follow straight this way for 1 mile until you join another car park. Turn left towards the entrance and cross over the main road heading to the public footpath. Follow the path along fields, cross over two tracks and go through several gates until you enter Coombe village.

(1) Turn left walking along the road for 150 metres and bear left to the public footpath before the house when the road bends right. Walk this peaceful large path for 1 mile following the blue arrow until you reach a fork. Bear left slightly going up until a junction (gate with a private land signpost in front of you). Ascend left the track leading to a junction signpost.

(2) Turn right following "East Road Lodge 1 mile, Portreath 2 1/4 miles". The path goes next to a private property surrounded by a fence and a hedge.

(3) Continue straight until you join a big tree in the middle of a fork. Bear right along the fence (private property), go past a stunning twisted beech tree, then another characteristic one until you join a junction signpost.

(4) Go straight ahead following "to East Lodge 3/4 mile" signpost (and red arrow), follow this path for 500 metres and head right towards the fence along the golf course at the next junction. Continue straight along the golf course for 500 metres until you bear left at the next signpost following "Portreath 1 1/4 miles" signpost leading to the East Lodge car park.

(5) Go past the car park on your left, cross over the road and take the path next to another golf course which leads to Feadon Lane. Cross over the lane slightly left to the path next to the Spa signpost and follow this path which bends left along the fence until you reach the road next to a residential area.

(6) Walk along this road on your right until you reach crossroads. Cross the over the road (B3301) towards Green Lane dead-end in front of you. Walk this lane for 600 metres until you join a descending path leading to Battery Hill.

(7) Bear left in Battery Hill going past Battery House which overlooks Portreath Beach and continues until you reach Smugglers Cove Cottages in the residential area. From this place, take the coastal path indicated on your left (Western Hill National Trust signpost) and ascend the hill keeping right side if you want to see views over Portreath Cove but pay attention: steep cliffs and hidden drops ahead!

(8) Follow the coastal path including a diversion path due to a cliff fall, go past Western Cove until you descend the beautiful path to Caravannel Downs and Porth-Cadjack Cove. Then, you go up the steep zig-zag path still along the coast up and down the slope until you reach your car.(S/E)

This is a walk with something for everyone. Cliffs, meadows, woodlands and even the opportunity to pop onto the beach or have fish and chips in the small town of Portreath. Directions and map are very easy to follow and it takes about 3 hours. some steep climbing at the end along the cliffs. Main watch out is the entrance to the car park which isn't sign posted and is down a farm track to the car park.
