Streatley to Wantage, The Ridgeway the Other Way

The Ridgeway the other way. The National Trail from North-East to South-West. The fourth stage is a broad track for a considerable distance, mostly with a natural surface and few hedges. Here the sky dominates but it can be particularly exposed in wet, cold or hot weather.

Description

Start : The Bull pub, junction between A329 and B4009, Streatley. (RG8 9JJ)

(S) From the Bull Inn, head North along Wallingford Rd (A329) bearing left at a major road junction (signposted Wantage and Didcot) along Wantage Rd (A417).

(1) Bear left again to go up Rectory Road, with houses on the left and open fields on the right.

(2) Go past the Goring & Streatley Golf Course.

(3) Continue on the road past Thurle Grange, Post Box Cottage and the entrance to Warren Farm.

(4) Bear left after Warren Farm to drop down to a junction.

(5) Carry on straight ahead to another junction near Lowbury Hill.

(6) Keep heading North-West to cross an are of horse gallops, bearing left to head west above Compton.

(7) At a junction with Churn Road, turn right and head North-West following the indications for The Ridgeway to go under the A34.

(8) Carry straight on to cross Bury Lane at a car park, on either side of the road, and on again to Scutchamer's Knob Car Park. Follow the indications along the Ridgeway bending left to head South-West to cross the Ilsley Downs Riding Route and past the Ridegway Reservoir, to go along the Downland Villages Riding Route and past the Lord Wantage Monument before reaching Bitham Rd and the car park on the B4494.

(9) Cross the road right then left to continue on the bridleway bearing right past Pewit Farm to reach Manor Road (A338).

(10) Cross over the road and continue along Court Hill Road in a North-West direction to reach Letcombe Regis.

(11) At the juntion with Manor Field Road turn right to head North-East out of the village to cross the fields and Letcombe Brook to eventually come out onto Portway (B4507).

(12) Go straight across to Priory Road to weave through to Saints Peter & Paul Church in Wantage. (E)

Useful Information

Start : The Bull pub, junction between A329 and B4009, Streatley. (RG8 9JJ)

Facilities: Make sure you take plenty of water and food as there are not many places to get supplies without a bit of a detour.

Terrain: There are some woods but most of the route is exposed so sun cream might also be useful. Wet weather gear is recommended and boots that will get you through the mud (gaiters are a good addition).

This is obviously horse riding country and training for racing horses, so take time to watch as these beautiful creatures fly along the gallops Take care of yourself and look out for wildlife along the way. Just enjoy the journey and make the most of the moment.
