Stanley Force and Devoke Water

Dog friendly circular walk following the Esk river to see Stanley Force waterfall and extended to the remote tarn of Devoke Water.

Description

Start: Small Car park on the left before Dalegarth Campsite. (CA19 1TF) Grid ref. NY 171 003

(S/E) Exit the car park, take right (North-East) in the direction of the river. Just before the bridge, take the footpath on your right that follow the river Esk. Continue on this path until seing a bridge on your left hand side.

(1) Cross the bridge and continue straight (East) for around 280m.

(2) Take right (South-West) and continue on this path that will cross several small becks (around 770m). You will follow a dry-stone wall for a little while in the forest and then the path will open on moorland. Be careful this path is not really visible, good navigation skills will be needed.

(3) Take right across the moorland (South) to go in the direction of Whincop farm. Continue on this path until reaching the farm (around 600m or so). Pass the farm and continue straight for around 380m on the larger path until reaching an intersection with another path.

(4) Take left, (South-East).

(5) On the way, do not take the path on your right, continue straight (South-East) on this path until reaching Birkerthwaite farm (700 m or so).

(6) Cross Birkerthwaite farm following the footpath signs and take right on the large path (West). Stay on this path until arriving at an intersection of paths after 730m or so.

(7) Take left (South-West) and continue until reaching a road. Cross the road and continue straight in the direction of Devoke Water. Take the left path (South-West) to walk around Devoke water. Stay on this path until reaching the end of Devoke Water.

(8) Take right (North- East) to continue walking around Devoke water. Cross the beck. There are now to path (a lower one along the shore of the tarn, usually very boggy and a higher one going up Water Crag and Rough Crag). Take one of the path to finish the walk around Devoke water and go back in the direction of the road. Cross again the road and continue straight. At the intersection of paths at waypoint (7) where you take left.

(9) At the next junction, then take right (North) when reaching High ground. Continue on this path until reaching an intersection of paths back to waypoint (5). Take left here to continue on the path (North-West), stay on this path until reaching Low ground (Do not take right at the waypoint (4)).

(10) At low ground take right (North) and continue straight until seeing a path on your right hand side going to Stanley Force.

(11) Take right to go in the direction of Stanley Force and join again the Esk river. Follow the signs to find the platform to observe the waterfall.

(12) Then, take right to take the path that follow the Esk river. Continue on this path until finding the road going to the campsite.

(13) At the road take right to go back to the car park.(S/E)

Useful Information

Start: Small Car park on the left before Dalegarth Campsite. (CA19 1TF) Grid ref. NY 171 003

Car park: Just before Dalegarth train station take on the right in the direction of Dalegarth campsite (Dalegarth Hall Cottage, Holmrook CA19 1TF). There is a small free car park on the left after the bridge. Otherwise park at Dalegarth train station (Fees apply).

Terrain: Road, forest paths, moorland paths. Can be very muddy.

Dog-friendly: Mostly dog friendly except when crossing the farms and some sheeps near Devoke Water. Dog must be on lead when crossing area with livestock.
