Somerset’s Jurrasic Coast : Kilve & East Quantoxhead

Along this coast, the dramatic cliffs are layered with blue, yellow and brown lias from the Lower Jurassic period embedded with fossils, particularly ammonites. The beach at Kilve is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Behind the coast, the Quantock Hills rise up at Quantoxhead. Across the Bristol Channel, there are fine views of South Wales, whilst further west along the coast behind Minehead is North Hill and Exmoor National Park.

Parking was easy at Kilve village Hall. We have done this walk before but we were grateful for the Visorando map as we were unsure about crossing the fields. Although a short walk we found this coastal area and scenery amazingly beautiful and unspoilt and the Jurassic beach is very interesting too. We ended up with a nice cream tea near Kilve carpark.

Really nice easy walk; you can detour onto the beach for a while as we did and look for fossils.
