Description

Park your car on Broadway (several car parks).

(S/E) Start the walk in High Street next to the grassy square and the War Memorial. Walk High Street along the pavement for 500 metres before you turn left in Leamington Road when you reach the roundabout. Follow Leamington Road for 700 metres and turn right in Sandcroft Avenue.

(1) After almost 250 metres, take the footpath "Donnington Way" on the left past the House n°35. Go across a field, cross over Fish Hill (be careful, it's a traffic road where the cars go very fast!!), cross over a second smaller road and go through the stiles. Enter a field, then a second one and go diagonally left walking along the hedge. Continue in fields following the yellow arrows until you reach the road in Willersey. Walk along Broadway Road on your right for 500 metres before you turn left at the crossroads with Main Street.

(2) Go past the petrol station and turn right in Church Street (notice "no through road" signpost).

(3) Go through the gate and skirt the beautiful church by the left side. Walk the field along the cemetery for 200 metes and cross the small footbridge over the stream. Bear left along the hedge before you go diagonally right across the field (notice that you pass under the power line). Continue across fields following yellows arrows (Donnington Way).

(4) You finally reach St Nicholas' Church in Saintbury village. Skirt the church by the left side and continue the path which leads to the road. Turn right and immediately left to the footpath a bit hidden (yellow arrow).

(5) After 400 metres, bear right and go through the stile. At the next junction, go straight ahead, go through another stile and continue until you cross a small footbridge over a stream.

(6) Past the footbridge, bear right. Cross a driveway and ascend the pretty steep section in fields (look back at the nice view!) until you join a road. Cross the road slightly to the right and follow the path which leads to Dover's Hill Viewpoint!

(7) Notice that Dover's Hill stands at 230 metres above sea level and the lower slopes indicate past Roman activity! Continue along this natural amphitheatre, then bear right to the path which goes down to Chipping Campden. Follow the road on the left a few metres before you go down the track on the right which leads to the village.

(8) At the junction with Back Ends, bear right "Cotswold Way" following Hoo Lane before you turn left in Lower High Street at the corner with the Church of St Catharine.

(9) Stroll the main beautiful street of the village until you join the gorgeous Market Hall (400 years old!!!). Retrace your steps to the junction with Back Ends and take Birdcage Walk on your left. Continue the path between properties ignoring Dover's Hill footpath on the right. Cross over Littleworth in the residential area and go straight to the path which goes across the field (follow the signs avoiding the construction site). You finally reach Dyer's Lane.

(10) Follow this road on the right for 100 metres, go past the thatched house and head to the public footpath past the fork. Walk the footpath next to the road (Cotswold Way) and turn left at the right angle along the edge of the field for 500 metres. Then, the path takes away from the road and follows a grassy track for half a mile. Then, cross a track leading to a farm and continue straight the track before you go across a field. Cross Buckle Street and ascend again a field.

(11) Past this last field, you reach a viewpoint indicator on your right. Continue this way before you go slightly left to the "Permissive Route". Cross Fish Hill (be careful, traffic road!!) heading to the footpath in front of you (still Cotswold Way).
For a safer option, at the top of Fish Hill walk across through the car park (also a toilet stop!) and cross the road at the top rather than part way down as it is much safer having more vision and an island in the middle of the road. This diversion doesn't add any significant distance but is safer as the traffic is very busy.

Then, enter the nice path in the woods which continues in meadows. Go straight ahead to the Broadway Tower you can see far away.

(12) When you reach this wonderful tower (from the end of the 16th century), turn right "Cotswold Way" and descend the path which leads to Broadway for two kilometres. When you reach the village and Hight Street, you just need to turn left, go past the roundabout and you are back to the start next to the War Memorial.(S/E)

We enjoyed this walk but we started from Dovers Hill car park as we wanted to have lunch in Broadway. We knew the part between Dovers Hill and Broadway very well, but the section from Broadway over Saintbury Hill back to Dovers Hill was new to us and we found it really enjoyable.

Not a walk to do when the weather has been wet as the flat fields from Broadway across to Saintbury Hill will get very muddy and soggy.

Couple of points where the description could do with a bit of an update and in particular I would recommend that at the top of Fish Hill it is better to walk across through the car park (also a toilet stop!) and cross the road at the top rather than part way down as it is much safer having more vision and an island in the middle of the road. This diversion doesn't add any significant distance but is safer as the traffic is very busy.
