Roches Hill

This was a pleasant hike taking in a number of way marked trails with a number of small villages with friendly pubs to have well deserved drink and also some splendid views.

Description

This walk starts at The Triangle car park just below Roches Hill (PO18 0PT).

(S/E) Begin by following the road into Chalton for approximately 200m. You follow this footpath down into Singleton home of the Open air museum.

(1) Take a left turn after the church then follow the track heading towards the public house where you take a left onto the A286. This is a busy road so take care crossing here.

(2) You then take a right turn onto a signed footpath heading up to Hat Hill and the Historic Drovers path. You follow this path for approximately 2km and take a right tun where it meets a byway and head past Dove Cottage. You follow this track for about 2km until it meets the A286.

(3) Turn left and follow for about 1.5km. This road is very busy so take care.

(4) Opposite Wolverstone farm take the left turn up through the woods for about 1km.

(5) Turn right onto the left hand track not the right going down hill.The views here are stunning.Follow this path for about a kilometre where it intersects with a footpath, turn left and follow this footpath up hill through Bepton woods for about 1km.

(6) Turn left heading towards keepers cottage.Follow this track for about 1.5km until it meets a road at Staple Ash Farm.

(7) Turn left onto lane. Keep following this lane for about 500m until it intersects with another lane with a footpath opposite where you then turn right onto the lane towards Hylters Farm. Follow for about 1km where the lane forms a crossroads at Hyltdrs lane.

(8) Turn left. Follow this track for about 2km until it meets another lane and you follow the footpath opposite when you come to this point. Follow this footpath for 500m until you again meet the A286 at West Dean. Cross the road and follow sign for village shop. There is also a pub here if you need it.

(9) Turn right at the end of road and follow part of the Monarchs way until you come to a kissing gate.

(10) Bear right onto the West Sussex Literary trail. You follow this footpath for about 4km and you eventually come into East Lavant past Manor Farm.

(11) Turn left onto the road keep on here past past another pub for about 500m.

(12) Where there is a signed byway at a bend in the road turn left here. There is then a long climb up hill for about 2km to the top of Roches hill with spectacular views and the end of your hike. (S/E)
