Description

(S/E) Leave Port Tara Holiday Home and head left (Noth-West) on Ballaghmore Road (B145) towards the sea front. At the roundabout head down right towards the harbour following Beach road and footpath. You can extend the walk by going down and exploring the harbour.

(1) At the corner you can decide to either follow the footpath along Beach Road to the car park or you can walk straight on and down on the beach and rock shore. There is a path around the headland on the rocks that will take you to the beach and from there you can walk back up to Beach Road then the car park.

(2) At the corner of the car park, head down the path (East), keeping the water on your left, toward the river mouth. The views along this path of Runkerry bay and the sea are always stunning. Note this path is the only unpaved part of the route.

(3) At the bottom of the hill there is a sign post to the golf course and a small path that runs up a valley in the hillside. Take this path, right, up to the golf club house. This is the only steepish hill on the route.

At the club house take a break, otherwise walk along the footpath turning right on Bushfoot Road then straight ahead back to the main road (Ballaghmore Road). Turn right. Port Tara is visible at the corner and you are back to Port Tara Holiday Home.

Useful Information

At the club house if you are thirsty head in for a quick pint, everyone is welcome and the prices are very reasonable. The view from the club house across the golf course and the bay are amazing.

Heritage Railway path - Bushfoot

This short circular walk near Bushfoot Golf Club in the North coast resort of Portballintrae takes in stunning coastal scenery against the backdrop of the River Bush, Runkerry Strand, the Giants Causeway and Bushmills Heritage Railway.

This walk can easily be extended to provide coastal off-road access to the Giants Causeway, Northern Ireland’s only World Heritage Site.

Giant’s Causeway to Dunseverick Castle, Causeway Coastal Way

This is the 4th section of the Causeway Coastal Way. A grassy path continues along the cliff tops and over the route’s highest point.

The Giant's Causeway walk

Giant’s Causeway, renowned for its polygonal columns of layered basalt, is the only World Heritage Site in N Ireland. Resulting from a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago, this is the focal point for a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has attracted visitors for centuries. It harbours a wealth of local and natural history. Other noteworthy items include: a Spanish Armada shipwreck site (‘La Girona’) & many traces of the legendary giant – Finn MacCool.

This 5th section follows cliffs and beaches.
⚠️To enjoy this section at its best, check the tide times before you set out and avoid walking past White Park Bay at high tide. If the tide is high, you’ll have to follow the A2 road all the way from Dunseverick village to Ballintoy.
