Description

(S/E) With your back to the church in Milton Lilbourne turn right and walk downhill until you reach the end of the village and the road becomes unsurfaced. Continue and on reaching a house fork right to follow the footpath along the broad track until a farmyard. Walk through this, through a gate and walk straight on across the field to pick up a path ascending the steep hill to the right. At the top follow the barbed wire fence on your left as it goes round to the left. Soon reach a gate and go through. Keep following the path as it ascends more gently. Just before a small wood, go through a gate on the right and walk with the woodland on your left. Go through another gate and keep straight on until you reach Giant's Grave long barrow.

(1) Keep straight on along the top of the hill with the fence on your left enjoying views to the right across Vale of Pewsey. When the hill drops steeply away to the right keep on to reach a stile and gate to enable you to keep straight on along the hillside. Eventually the hill curves and drops away to the right, with the path following the hill gently down. (I have checked this walk a week ago, and the description and map are accurate. Over a stile at the bottom keep straight on, soon joining a broad track which comes in from the right. Continue straight on when another track joins from the right. Go under a brick bridge and join a lane on a right angle. Continue straight on to enter outskirts of Pewsey.

(2) Look out for the house Down view on the right, and take the footpath which goes up drive then a narrow path runs across the fields to Kepnal.

(3) In Kepnal turn left on the lane and follow it right and left.
Take a signed path to the right and follow the path across the fields then down steps to reach a lane.

(4) Turn left into Fyfield. Then quickly right onto a path signed Milton Lilbourne
Through woodland, then along left hand field edge. Look to your right to enjoy views of your outward route along the downs. Keep straight on over a few stiles and reach Milton Lilbourne outskirts. Cross a road and follow a tarmac path straight on passing houses until you reach the churchyard.
Continue through it, with a wall on right and church on left to reach Milton Lilbourne High Street and the departure point.(S/E)

I started this walk in Pewsey. It becomes interesting after climbing up onto Fyfield Down, when the views become magnificent. However on the path that scars its way down Pewsey Hill I didn't see a left fork which I should have taken. If it exists it isn't obvious. The main path leads to Southcott Drove, which I took, not realising it wasn't the parallel (to the left) Winter's Drove. That was, until I arrived in Pewsey. Not a problem for me as, having started in Pewsey, my unintended route crossed a path I had taken earlier, so I knew where I was. But following the prescribed route one might get confused, with the instructions not working. However no doubt the walker would soon work out the mistake and what to do about it to get back on track.
