Description

Start : Grotaig car park, Drumnadrochit, Inverness IV63 6XH. Grid Ref. NH 490 238

(S/E) With the car park entrance in your back, walk towards the lane in front of you. At the junction keep straight on the road towards Hill Path and Lochness Clay works Pottery. When the road bends left towards a junction with a wooden bridge left over the river, go straight up the iron gate signposted Hill Footpath. You can also make a detour here to the Pottery Tearoom.

You are now walking on a single track with a wire fence on your right and a river on your left. On your way, you will encounter a boardwalk and some views of mountains on your right then an iron door. Go through that door and keep straight with the wire fence on your right. Carry straight on this single track. On your way, you will walk on boardwalks again before going uphill to reach a forest track.

(1) Cross the wide track ahead to reach another gate "Hill Footpath sign". Stay alert for any engines when you cross. Walk up the hill into the woods with the stream on your left-hand side. On the way, you will encounter rocky parts, roots, and a bench on your left. When you see some side paths, keep straight up the hill. The stream will be still on your left. After a while, you will pass an iron gate and keep straight ahead up the hill crossing the stream.

(2) At the next junction with a wide forest track, keep ahead and be careful of forest operations. The single track goes up the hill reaching an open area. Do not forget to look at the views on your back while going up the hill. Keep the huge stile/wooden ladder ahead of you as a target.

(3) Past the "ladder", and walk straight ahead on the main footpath. From here, enjoy the 360° degrees view of Loch Ness and the mountains. From that part, the path can be boggy as you walk along the ridge and some steep ways up the hill. If it is not too foggy, find your way towards the cairn.

Past the cairn, the path goes slightly downhill, and take the path straight ahead going to a second cairn. Carry straight on the ridge to reach other cairns at Meall Fuar-mhonaidh summit. On your right (North-West), be careful, there is a cliff from where there is an incredible view of Loch nam Breac Dearga and windmills. From there, walk back to the car using the same way as you came from. (S/E)
