Conifers at the top of May Hill
View of Severn River far away from May Hill
Towards South Wales hills from May Hill
Nice property in Glasshouse village

Description

Park your car at May Hill car park (close to Yartleton Farm).

(S/E) From the car park, head to the metallic gate on the other side of the road and go straight across the grassland heading to the large path in the woods which slightly goes up for 250 metres.

(1) Then, go through the small gate ("May Hill Walk" blue sign). Go across the open meadow with ferns leading to the conifers area far away. You finally reach May Hill enjoying great views of the Severn River and South Wales mountains!

(2) Past the Os Triangulation Point, continue straight the path between ferns which goes down for almost one kilometre. Then, go through the gate on your left following "May Hill" arrow, go past the National Trust signpost and continue "May Hill walk" and "Wysis Way" on the left when you reach the "No horses" signpost. Go past "Sheepcote Private Drive" signpost until you join a fork past a gate.

(3) At this fork, ignore the yellow arrow which goes straight but follow the yellow one and "Wysis Way" which descends on the right. Follow this narrow path in the woods for one kilometre before you reach a road. Ascend the road on the left for 250 metres and turn right when you see the "public footpath" signpost. Go across the field leading to the woods.

(4) Pay attention when you enter the woods, take the left side at the non-well-marked fork and continue the path for 500 metres before you turn right past a small stream. Then, continue the path (can be wet and muddy!), avoid a fallen tree before you reach a junction with three signs (one yellow arrow and two horseshoes).

(5) Bear left walking the larger path. After 250 metres, continue straight ignoring a track on your left until you reach two signposts with two yellow arrows.

(6) Turn left and again left after 50 metres towards the restricted byway which leads to the road after 650 metres. Turn right and walk along the road for 450 metres. Bear left when you reach a metallic gate leading to a public bridleway next to "Huntley Woods Greenway" signpost. Ascend this pretty steep way for almost one kilometre.

(7) At the junction ignore the blue arrow but follow the yellow one on the right and continue up until you join a stile after 450 metres.

(8) Go through the stile and cross Geopark Way after a few metres. The path finally goes along the road down on your right until you join this road. Ascend the road for 150 metres and you are back to the car park.(S/E)

It would be best to:

Say precisely which way to turn, ie left or right, in one simple sentence.
Be careful how you use the term fork, better to use two or three way junction.
Not mention things that you need to ignore.
Be clearer when explaining signposts.

The instructions were not very clear. We had difficulty following them and came back to the start by a different route. However we enjoyed the walk and would do it again.

Thanks

This walk has a good mix of gentle and steeper gradients, open views and woodland sections. The vista from May Hill is superb. This was the busiest part, with very few visitors elsewhere. A path had been cut through the sweetcorn so no detour was necessary to reach point 4. As noted in the description care is then needed, a GPS being helpful here in double-checking that the path going in the correct direction was being followed.

This is a super walk, with great views from May Hill, and a fascinating series of woodland paths to follow on a bright day.

The instructions need careful following but in the main we kept on track except for the section which takes you through a farmer's field which has crops growing with no path through it, so we had to wander round the field to get to the exit.
If you're doing the walk. simply turn left when you cross the style and walk round the edge of the field till you reach the exiting style into the woods.

Great walk.
