Margate to Ramsgate - Walk the Viking Trail

Should we walk from Margate to Ramsgate or from Ramsgate to Margate? Whichever way you want to do this walk, it is one of the most popular hikes on the South Coast and a MUST-DO! Whilst Ramsgate is much prettier than Margate, the food is better in Margate … so it’s all about what you prefer! For the purpose of this walk, we will be doing the walk from Margate to Ramsgate.

Margate to Ramsgate Walk

Description

Start: Margate Train Station, Station Approach, Margate (CT9 5AD)

(S) From the station, walk (North-East) down Station Approach until you reach Marine Terrace.

(1) Turn right (East) onto Marine Terrace and walk alongside the Main Sand Beach (where you can see a tidal pool and children's rides). Continue on the coastal path until you reach Walpole Bay (around 2.7Km) where you can see a massive tidepool.

(2) From Walpole Bay, the path turns towards the South then East again. Walk along the promenade again (East) for around 2Km to arrive at Botany Bay (easily recognisable by its single rock coming out of the water).

(3) Continue on the path in a South-Eastern direction for around 800m and you arrive at Kingsgate Bay (where you can see Kingsgate Castle overlooking the sea).

(4) Cross Kingsgate Bay car park to reach B2052 road where you turn left. Go past Joss Bay on your left to walk on the cliff promenade again on your left. Not long after (1.2Km), the path diverts from the cliff edge onto the mainland.

(5) Turn right onto Cliff Road and then left onto North Foreland Road (B2052). On your left, just past Thanet Plane Gardens on your left, find a footpath leading back to the beach (South-East-East). Take this footpath.

(6) When you reach its end, turn right to continue your walk on the cliff edge path (South) for around 1Km.

(7) You soon arrive in Broadstairs. Here, you can divert from the Viking Trail route to wander around the town otherwise, continue your walk South towards Ramsgate.

(8) When you reach Dumpton Bay, the path diverts from the coastline. Turn right onto Dumpton Gap road and then left onto a grassy area. Cross the area South-East-South along the coastline for around 1Km to arrive at King George VI park. Walk across the park keeping the coastline and exit by Victoria Palace Gate.

(9) At the gate, turn left to continue on the Viking Trail path walking towards Ramsgate.

(10) At Ramsgate Sands Beach, turn right (North-West) onto Victoria Road. Continue up this road which then becomes Boundary Road.

(11) At the crossroad with A254 (Margate Road) and Chatham Street, turn right onto Shah Place and left onto Station Approach. Continue on Station Approach road until you reach Ramsgate Train Station. (Ramsgate Train Station. Station Approach Rd, Ramsgate (CT11 7RE)) (E)
