Mallards Pike Lake
Autumn colours in Staple-edge Woods
Track in Staple-edge Wood

Description

Park your car at Mallards Pike Lake car park.

(S/E) Head to the café, go past the building and continue the large path until your bear right and cross over the lake. The track bends left and slightly goes up. Follow straight this track next to the power line for two kilometres ignoring both right and left tracks.

(1) At the T-junction, turn right and continue for 250 metres before you bear left at the next junction. Follow this track for 600 metres before you join a fork.

(2) Turn right and after 100 metres, take the non-well-marked track which goes up in the woods. Ascend this grassy track. The track in the woods finally levels and becomes a path before you reach a junction. Descend the path for 75 metres on your left leading to a well-marked track. Follow the track on your right.

(3) After 400 metres, ignore the first way on your left but take the second one. Go down this grassy way for 300 metres.

(4) Turn right when you reach a track and an isolated larch. Continue the flat path (can be muddy after wet conditions) and open your eyes because you could see deers!!! (many spoors in this area). You finally reach an open grassland with ferns.

(5) At the fence, bear right going up along the fence on your left. Ascend the path a bit steeper next to another fence until you reach a junction with a large track (Notice the yellow arrow and Greenway signpost). Cross over this track to the narrow public footpath in front of you. Then, follow the track you reach on your left next to private properties. Walk the main large track which bends left for 150 metres.

(6) Next to the building with sheet metal, bear right leaving the main track. Go straight ahead until you join a metallic watchtower.

(7) Past the metallic tower, continue straight ahead of the grassy track which goes down in the woods. Descend ignoring both left and right paths until you join a T-junction.

(8) Descend to the right for only 250 metres and leave the track taking the left path a bit hidden. Go straight down this path leading to another well-marked track. Turn right for 150 metres and you are back to Mallards Pike Lake. Walk along the lake (left side) and cross the footbridge to go back to the car park.(S/E)
