Description

(S/E) Start at Ludham Church, where there is parking for a few cars. Ludham has a cafe and pubs. With the church on your right, head South down the lane for about half a mile, then take a sharp turn right (West) onto Hall Common Road.

(1) Take the first bridleway on your left, at the T junction on the bridleway turn right, then left at the next T junction. Follow this concrete track southwards for half a mile to the river and St. Benet's Abbey. There are various permissive paths at the Abbey, and a wooden cross which can be visited by crossing Cow Holm to the left (East) of the Abbey.

(2) Facing the river, find an information board to your right and follow the permissive path (West/ Northwest). This eventually reaches a road near Ludham Bridge where there are public toilets, shops, and a cafe.

(3) Cross the road carefully (this is a main road) and pick up the river path to the left of the cafe / Bridge Stores. Follow this river path for a mile or so until you have passed a series of scrapes on your right, where there is a footpath heading Southeast.

(4) Take the footpath to the Southeast (away from the river) then head Northeast where this path meets 2 other footpaths. Follow this path, keeping to the right when another path joins from the left. The footpath becomes a grassy track leading to some houses where the track turns sharply to the right, and becomes a quiet lane. Follow this to a T junction with a row of houses opposite.

(5) Turn left along the road, then take a footpath on your left through a gap in the hedge. Follow this over the field to cross another lane, and pick up the bridleway opposite. Follow the bridleway, ignoring footpaths from the right and left.

(6) Where the bridleway turns sharply to the left, instead follow the footpath straight ahead until it reaches a quiet lane. Turn right onto the lane and follow it until it bends sharply to the right past a large pond and farmhouse.

(7) Take the footpath on the left past a garden, and through the hedge then across a field. Turn left along the footpath, then right after 50 feet or so. Follow this path until a footpath on your right heads through some woods (which can be boggy in wet weather).

(8) Follow the footpath through the woods and through the churchyard, to come out onto a lane. Head towards Catfield along Church Road. Catfield has a pub at the end of this road.

(9) Retrace your steps to (8). Then turn left along Sharp Street.

(10) After 50 feet or so turn right along Goffins Lane past a water tower on your left. After about a mile you will reach a crossroads.

(11) Turn left along the road, past a small housing estate and the school, into Ludham village.

(12) At the T junction turn right - be careful as this road is busier - past some houses, shops and a pub on your right.

(S/E)Cross the road carefully as this is a double bend and the main road, back to Ludham church where you started.
