(S/E) Start at Penwortham Holme Recreation Ground. Turn left (South-East) along Leyland Road passing Penwortham Old Bridge on your left-hand side then onto Riverside Road. At the end of Riverside Road, continue on the footpath beside the River Ribble on your left-hand side, passing under rail bridges as the river bends North-East.
(1) When you reach the historic Old Tram Road, turn right (South) along with it.
(2) At the junction of Old Tram Road and a disused rail track, take the right most path of pair which follows the ex rail track. (South-East). Continue along the path as it passes above Wishingpool Lane and crosses Todd Lane North up to A6.
(3) Carefully head East crossing London Way (A6) dual carriageway using the official crossing point.
Pass through the gate into Brown Edge Wood and turn left (North) following the footpath closest to the woodlands West boundary onto a hard-surfaced path.
Leave the substantial path turning right (East) along the footpath initially behind houses then heading left (North-East). Take the footbridge on your right over Hennel Brook and turn left (North-West-North) following the path closest to the brook. Carry straight on with the brook on your left-hand side until you reach B6230.
(4) Turn right (East) just before B6230, along Hennel Lane passing some shops offering refreshment opportunities. On meeting Chorley Road, turn left (North-West-North) briefly along it.
(5) Then, turn left (West) along Walton Green just before the footbridge. At the end of the road, continue on the footpath as it follows River Darwen on your right-hand side, passing under London Way (A6). When you meet Wiery Lane, turn right (East) across the River Darwen, towards the retail park. Refreshments and retail therapy are available with a minor detour.
(6) After crossing River Darwen turn left (North-West-North) taking the path between the River Darwen on your left-hand side and the car park.
Turn right (North-East) following the footpath along the bank of River Ribble. When you reach A6, turn left (North-West) over the bridge and the River Ribble.
(7) On the other side, turn left (South-West) along Ashworth Grove road and follow the footpath along the North bank of River Ribble. You have now the river on your left-hand side.
Continue beside the river as it passes Frenchwood Park and enters Avenham Park. Pass under the rail viaduct to continue beside the river still on your left-hand side. Refreshment options are available before and after the bridges.
(8) At some stage, you reach Riverside road. Continue West along it to Penwortham Old Bridge, now a pedestrian bridge.
(9) Turn left (South) over the Penwortham Old Bridge across River Ribble.
(10) At the end of it, turn right (North-West) briefly along Leyland Road to go back to start at Penwortham Holme Recreation Ground. (S/E):
