VIEW TOWARDS RIVER USK AND CHRITCHURCH

Description

Start: Lodge Hill Church. (NP18 3DL) Grid ref. ST 325 913.

(S/E) With your back to the church, follow the fingerpost at the entrance to Lodge Farm along a grass track leading towards a metal kissing gate. Continue along this path towards the Hill Fort (A) until reaching a stile which will take you into an open field.

Enjoy the great views of the River Usk and Newport beyond. Continue across the field to the second stile, then head downhill to Pillmawr Farm. Cross the stile and drop down the steep bank to a metal field gate. Pass through the field gate onto Pillmawr Lane.

(1) Follow a narrow pathway right directly in front of Mount Pleasant cottage, continue over stile and bear right before heading downhill to a stile at the roadside.

(2) Turn right after the stile passing two driveways and look out for a stile on your right. Follow waymarkers along the farm track to a stile at the field boundary. Cross and continue along to the footbridge.

(3) Follow waymarks, keeping North-West, over several fields and footbridges for almost 1.6km, before reaching the farm access road just beyond Park Farm Cottage.

(4)Turn right and continue along the farm track for approximately 400 meters before crossing the stile on your right, heading towards the footbridge and uphill towards the woodland.

(5) Do not cross stile here, but follow waymarks to the right to another stile leading you into the wood, cross here and follow the path through Lodge wood back to the start at Lodge Hill Church.(S/E)

Good views at the start of the walk over Newport. Parts if the walk are over boggy ground and over a ramshackle bridge over a stream. Nothing a decent pair of walking boots can't deal with. A very pleasant afternoon stroll.

Hi MCAnne and RichieD,

Thank you for taking the time to give us that great feedback. I am going to try to contact the author and the local authorities to see who could go and fix the stiles and bridges.
Also thank you for the comments so we can improve the description for the next walkers.

Enjoy your walks.

A lovely walk which I look forward to doing again.

Here are a few comments which might be useful for you regarding the walk description and maintenance. Some of the route descriptions are a bit vague eg along the lines of “ you cross several fields and footbridges “. Some of the stiles are in a bad state of repair and one footbridge presents a real health and safety hazard. It would have been helpful to know that the walk ended with a very steep climb. Also, it might be useful to check the walk distance as I think it is further than as described.

A lovely walk with excellent views. The distances between main points would make the route clearer, plus a warning that the final section is a steep climb. However, the route seems to have been established several years ago and there has been no maintenance since. Some of the stiles require repairs and one of the footbridges is a serious health and safety hazard
