Description

Park your car close to Newington Barn at the top of the hill.

(S/E) Go down the road a few metres until you find a gate on your left (notice an isolated property on the other side of the road). Go through this gate. Go straight across the field heading to the trees. Go down the slope and walk along the low wall on your right which leads to Lasborough.

(1) Past the gate in the hamlet, take the driveway on your right and follow this way for 650 metres. Before you reach the property, bear left to the track which leads to a gate. Walk this grassy track.

(2) Walk past a pond in the fields to your left and continue into the woods. At the fork close to Fishing Pond, bear left to the main track. Past the pond, follow the yellow arrow sign still keeping the left side.

(3) This muddy path finally reaches a junction. Cross over the track and go slightly down the path in front of you. Follow this flat path with yellow arrows which joins a track. Continue this track along Ozleworth Brook leading to a gate (Private right of way on the right).

(4) Past this gate, cross a small footbridge, then, turn right immediately and do not cross the second footbridge over Marlees Brook. Past this second footbridge, bear left (yellow arrow) following the path along the stream for half a mile until you cross over a track.

(5) Go straight ahead (footpath with yellow arrow) across the open meadow and still along the stream for almost one mile. Then, follow a track for a few meters until you join a signpost with two yellow arrows.

(6) Take the grassy path straight ahead ignoring the arrow leading to the path on your right.

(7) At the next fork, go up to the right until you join a direction signpost with several arrows. Bear right at the right angle heading to a stile after 50 metres. Then, follow a white arrow in a green sign skirting Bagpath by the right side until you reach a track.

(8) At the junction with the property, ascend the driveway in front of you (yellow arrow again). Turn right when you reach the road for 75 metres. Then, head to the "public footpath" signpost on your left walking the grassy track along the low wall for 450 metres.

(9) Go diagonally left across the next field towards a low tower in the distance. Go over a stone stile by the Derelict church and descend to the road, walk the road which goes down on your right for one kilometre, go past Newington Bagpath. After the last ascent, you are back to the start.(D/A)

Very enjoyable walk, would have scored 'very good' but we got lost!
We thought waymark 4 was 3 so missed the right turn. Difficult to say how to improve directions because we missed out 4-7. I recall there were 2 metal footpath signs after the footbridge pointing left (straight on) which the directions could say 'ignore keep right'. We carried on & went passed Ozleworth Park and managed to re-join the walk near waymark 7.
We have now subscribed to OS Maps App to avoid similar repetitions!

Hi Delphinium,

Thanks for your e-mail. We enjoyed the walk, and it was easy enough to follow using the map. But we found the instructions somewhat confusing! Our thoughts below.

Best wishes

Macaroni

Beautiful walk on a perfect spring day. It's in an area we've driven past countless times without realising what lay close by. Not many other walkers about on this Good Friday.
We had a couple of weasels dart across the track in front of us as we walked along Ozleworth Bottom.
Later we sat with our picnic on a log near point 7 on the map and watched Peacock butterflies dancing around us for half and hour. We went off course for a while after that, but no matter, it was all enjoyable. Next time we'll walk the other way round and should find the correct path.

Rather than park up in the hamlet of Newington Bagpath we decided it would be better to start at the Hunter's Inn at Kingscote (very large car park and ideal for refreshment on completion!!) and walk up though the woods by Furze Grove and along Hay Bottom and up to Church Covert to the abandoned church. We crossed behind the church and followed the track making sure to enter the field on the left when we hit the 'private' sign. We stayed on the high path and picked up the published trail halfway between (1) and (2)
The walk along the two valleys was very interesting. Underfoot conditions very dry so that was a bonus! There was a lot of tree-felling / clearance going on which meant the path to follow wasn't immediately obvious. Later realised this was work relating to Ash-dieback hence all the activity in Ozleworth Bottom.
Magnificent large properties and very interesting vistas along the route. After (8) we turned left across a large field to pick up the track back to the Hunter's Inn and a well-earned pint (or two!)
