Lake Biviere in the Nebrodi mountain range

Hiking without technical difficulty in the forests of the massif of Nebrodi to Lago Biviere and passing by Lago Maulazzo. We constantly follows a more or less good track on the north and west slopes of Monte Soro, one of the peaks of the Sicilian mountains.

Description

Start at the Col de la Femmina Morta pass.

Take a small paved road until you reach a crossroads (1). Turn left on a vehicle track, go downhill (to the right a road rises to the Monte Soro and its peaks).

Arrive after less than an hour at Lake Maulazzo (2), pleasant place for a break.
Continue down, the track is worse here and passes a fountain (3) (approximate position).

Continue north-east and come to a crossroads of the tracks (4). Take the right branch (left goes down to Alcara Li Fusi if I remember correctly). Continue for a long stretch in an easterly direction to arrive near Lake Bivière (5). You can head down to lake shore and take a walk around it (in a clockwise direction on the diagram).

Return by the same route, this time uphill.

Useful Information

Some cars use the track to Lago Maulazzo (beyond this a 4x4 is required in places).
There is a picnic area at Lago Maulazzo.
Fountain (with a strong flow in early May) shortly after (3) (approximate location).
Between Lake Maulazzo and Lake Bivière there are two streams with fresh and abundant water in early May.
A beautiful beech forest, very often in the shade.

The route described is round trip so I have planned a loop via Monte Soro, then a descent to Lake Bivière returning by the route described, but a group of German hikers have said there was too much snow on the eastern slope of Monte Soro (early May). We were not equipped for the snow so we opted for a round trip.

Always stay careful and alert while following a route. Visorando and the author of this walk cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident during this route.

During the walk or to do/see around

We saw very little wildlife, just a few birds around the lakes: grey herons among others.
View from Etna’s west slope from Lake Biviere.
Panoramic views over the rocks above Alcara Li Fusi.
