Description

(S) From Kenilworth Castle continue round the bends to find the entrance to the Castle carpark. Take the carpark entrance and go on the service road, past the carpark.

(1) After 50 paces go left up the track through a short stretch of woodland. Take the waymarked metal gate to the right to take a grassy passage, signed Rouncil Lane 1¼ miles. At the end of the grassy passage find a field. Go left with the hedge left to find the far field metal corner gap.

Take the gap turn right, keeping the fence to the playing field left (ignore stile L to playing fields) and continue to the end of the fence.

(2) Take the metal gate and go 1/2 left across the field to a second metal gate. Take the gate and cross the concrete footbridge. Continue ahead to reach the metal field gate to the right of the farm buildings. Go through the gate and go ahead, ignoring paths to the right and left.

Follow a well-used path, keeping the hedge left. Take the gate and continue with the hedge left. Continue to go with the fence right and hedge left to come to the gap to Rouncil Lane.

(3) Take the gate and go right on the road for 50 paces to find a track left leading to Goodrest Farm. Take the concrete track and pass a derelict WW2 POW camp to find a metal kissing gate in the hedge left. Take the gate and go with the fence left to take the kissing gate to the right of the lone tree.

Go 1/4 left to find the field edge and old stone bridge, cross the bridge and go 1/2 right up the field to the junction of paths. Do not take the path onto the golf course but stay in the field and go right with the hedge left.

(4) At the field corner find the kissing gate. Take the kissing gate and continue with the hedge left to pass the pond then the wooden gate. Continue ahead, ignore a mid hedge gate / path left, and with the hedge left go under power lines to take the metal gate into the wood.

Follow this often muddy and uneven path right through the wood to emerge alongside the golf course. Go ahead on the grass track with the hedge right and wires above left.

(5) Go past the "corner" pylon and through the hedge gap and go around the field edge to find a kissing gate in the far right comer. Take the gate and continue ahead past the mound on your left. Bear left through often overgrown shrubbery, or take a diversion to your right, into the open field and go 1/4 left to pass under telegraph lines with Woodloes Farm over on your right.

(6) At the junction with the track to the farm turn left. Follow the track to a junction with a lane. Go right and follow the lane over A46 (Kenilworth Bypass) to come to main A429. Go right on the path, over the large roundabout, past a M&S convenience store/petrol station and ahead up the road to come to the canal bridge.

(7) Before the bridge take the path right to join the towpath and turn left to pass under Bridge 49 in the direction of Leamington. Pass a number of Narrow Boat repair yards on the way to Bridge 46 (Tesco Superstore). Continue ahead on the towpath passing The Moorings pub, then Morrisons/Costa Coffee across the road, to eventually reach Bridge 41. Leave the towpath up the slope and turn left into Tachbrook Road.

(8) At the traffic lights cross the road into Lower Avenue, passing under the bridge. At the junction, turn right into Spencer Street and proceed towards Parish Church. At church turn left into Victoria Terrace. Lots of shops here. Cross Victoria Bridge and turn right across the road into Jephson Gardens.

(9) Walk through the lovely Jephson Gardens, past a cafe and then cross Willes Road and follow the footpath up through coppice to open grass. Walk across the grass with trees right to find a path and a road down to Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre and the nice Comyn Arms pub off to left. (E)
