Horsenden Hill Walk

The good thing about London is that you do not need to go far to track down some exceptionally decent walks. Take Horsenden Hill for instance: who would have thought that you could walk through meadows, a farm, a forest and along a Canal, all within a London postcode and accessible by tube? And you can! A walk through Horsenden Hill will definitely make you forget you are in the city.

Description

Start: Horsenden Hill Entrance Gate. (Nearby postcode UB6 7PB) Grid ref. TQ 1618 8438

(S/E) The walk starts at the gate of Horsendin Hill car park entrance. Walk on Horsenden Lane North with the carpark gate on your right-hand side (West), towards the start of the Gruffalo Trail. Once you get to the well-indicated start of the trail, you have 3 footpaths in front of you.

Take the one in the middle going uphill (North). After 550 m, the path bends to the right (North East). Follow the path. You then can see a couple of stairs leading to the top of the hill. Take the stairs. Once you arrive at the top, you can cross the field to get to the trig point, marking the highest point of the hill.

(1) Once at the trig point, retrace your steps towards the stairs but do not go back down. Instead, follow the footpath on your right (North East) when standing on top of the stairs. It leads towards a forested area. Follow this path into the woods and at the first junction, take the footpath on your left (North West). Continue on this path in the woodland for 340 m.

(2) When you get to the end of the footpath at the edge of the forested area, take the Capital Ring (Section 9) path on your left (West). Continue on this path for 390m. At the crossing with Horsenden Lane North, continue straight (South West) for another 200 m.

(3) When the path ends, turn left (South East). You arrive at a series of fields. There are different footpaths you can take to wander around the meadows and ponds. It does not really matter which path you take as long as you keep going down (South West) towards the Grand Union Canal.

(4) When you get to the bottom of the hill, you find a bridge going over the Grand Union Canal. Cross the bridge. Once on the opposite bank, turn left on the towpath (South East). Walk on the towpath for 1.1 Km. You then get to a bridge. Walk under the bridge and take the footpath on the right leading up to the footbridge. Cross the footbridge and you are back at the carpark entrance gate. Start: Horsenden Hill Entrance Gate. Grid ref. TQ 1618 8438 (S/E)
