Description

(S) From the Church of St John the Baptist go left and go up the adjacent road, Beaudesert Lane, to pass another church left to find a kissing gate giving access to a footpath leading uphill to Motte & Bailey ruins.

(1) Follow the highest path (do not descend) for about 1 mile eventually go under power lines to find the corner. Ignore the stiles and go left along the ridge with the hedge right and panoramic views left. Take the stile (Heart of England Way) and go 1/2 left to the field edge, take the stile into a wooded area, and go left.

At the junction of paths go ahead, continuing in a wooded area for some 90 paces to take the path left to exit by a stile. Go ahead with the hedge left to come to a ridge with a fine view.

(2) Go right carefully down the hill to find sometimes a very muddy gap. Go through the gap (or take stile) and go left across the small field centre to take a stile adjacent to the gate leading to the path alongside the gate entrance. Go right on the lane for 300 yards. At a T junction take the road right and after 20 paces take the kissing gate right.

(3) Go ahead with the fence right to take the awkward wooden kissing gate. Go ahead straight up the steep hill to find and take the kissing gate. Go through the copse and exit to the field. Ahead down the field to find the kissing gate.

Take the gate ahead with the fence and hedge right to follow round the field edge to exit 50 paces before the top right field corner by a metal kissing gate right. Go left with the hedge left to find and take the gate in a metal gate. Go right round the field edge to come to the tarmac driveway. Go right on the driveway and immediately left to follow the grassy track.

(4) Take the path left of power poles with a transformer to pass under power cables and up field edge with fence and barns right, passing under high power cables. At the top right field corner, by the copse, go right to find the hedge gap to the farm driveway. Go left to a road junction.

Turn right and walk for about 1 mile until you reach a staggered crossroads. Go ahead on Tapster Lane and, after a sharp left hand bend, pass Holly Tree Cottage on the left. Continue on the road which drops down and bends left. Look for stile high up in the hedge left just before the large Oak Tree.

(5) Take the stile and go ahead with the hedge right to the field corner. Go left 15 paces to find a stile. Take the stile and go right with the hedge right and 50 paces before the field end find a hidden hedge gap right. Go through the gap, over bridge and kissing gate. Go down field with hedge / electric fence right to find a far left field corner kissing gate. Take the gate and go 10 paces, and take a stile and a bridge to the road.

(6) Cross the road and go ahead on the rough vehicle way. After 100 paces take the kissing gate left into the field. Go with the hedge right leading into a scrub to find a kissing gate. Take the kissing gate and cross over a narrow field, through a gate in a gate, ahead and take a further gate in gate, heading for the motorway bridge. Make your way over M40 motorway via steep steps.

(7) 20 paces after the motorway bridge take stile right and walk inside wooden fencing to find and take the hedge gap right. Then go with the hedge left to find a substantial groundsman's buildings with a courtyard by the driveway, go right on the driveway past the house to exit the property via a gate leading to narrow lane. Turn right and go up lane to find St Mary's church.

(8) At the church go left down the footpath with the tree line right to find kissing gate. Take the kissing gate and go ahead over the hill to come to a gated bridge.

Cross the bridge and go right with the hedge right to go through the corner gap. Continue ahead along the narrow field to the corner gate / stile. Go up the centre of the field to the end of the tree line and find the stile by the gate. Take a stile and go ahead with the hedge right to find a corner kissing gate.

(9) Pass through farm buildings to find farm driveway leading to bridge over the canal. Cross the bridge and turn left going with the canal left. Walk along the canal for 1 mile until you reach The Wharf pub.

(10) Turn right up through the carpark to main A3400 in Hockley Heath. (E)

(Bakery just right over the road bridge and fish and chip shop and Co-op left).
