Description

(S) From the junction of Easington Road and Hartville Road (where stage 1 finished), cross the road and follow the footpath (restricted byway) on the opposite side of the road in a westerly direction.

(1) At the end of this byway, you will pass a pond on your right, go straight ahead through the gate and walk across the field.

(2) When you reach the junction of tracks turn left (south) through the gate and walk along the path by the hedgerow. This path will bend to the right and then left again, heading in roughly a southerly direction following the field boundary. At the end of this path, go through the gate and turn right onto a wider track. After approximately 300m go through the gate to your left, cross 2 fields and then turn right walking behind the barn, there are a number of gates, ensure they are closed behind you. When directly behind the barn at the small building, turn left again and continue to walk along the field boundary towards St Mary Magdelene Church.

(3) Go through the gate behind the church and turn right to walk along the side of the church. Walk through the car park noting the remains of the Great House into Magdalene Drive and past the primary school. Turn right (northwest) into Butts Lane and at the fork bear left and follow the curve of the road (northwest).

(4) When you reach the farm at the end of Butts Lane, bear left (northwest) at the pond and follow the path behind the farm which will be on your right. When you reach the tree line, follow the path north along the edge of the trees. Cross the stile and descend the steps, cross Bellows Burn and climb the steps at the other side. Continue following the path northwards out of the tree line until you reach the pond at Nesbit Hall, turn left (west).

(5) You will emerge onto the access road which runs in front of Nesbitt Hall, turn right (north). At the end of the access road, continue in a northerly direction on the footpath past the communication tower towards the tree line. Enter the trees following the path to the right (east).

(6) The path will bend to the north again, then cross Crimdon Beck. At the far side the path will bend to the right again, cross the stiles. When you emerge from the trees, the path turns north again to Monk Hesleden. When you reach the road, turn left (west) and follow the road for a short distance. Continue straight on (west) following the track across the fields. This track will turn to the northwest.

(7) When you reach the tunnel under the Hart to Haswell Walkway, look for the access point to reach the Walkway above. Once on the walkway, turn left (northwest).

(8) As you reach Hesleden you will cross East Terrace, you should see the houses to your right and a single building on your left. Continue to the next junction. To continue to the next section, continue along the Hart to Haswell Walkway. To end the walk at Hesleden, turn right into Station Road and walk to the Green on Front Street to catch the bus back to the start of the walk. (E)

Useful Information

Transport: There is on street parking at either end of the walk. You will need bus 206 Peterlee Purples to Blackhall and then either 23/24 from Blackhall Post Office stop back to the start of the walk.

Facilities: There are no facilities on this walk. However I do recommend the Hardwicke Hall Manor near the end of the walk or The Tall Ships near the start of the walk for food.

Accessibility: This walk is not accessible, it involves, many gates, stiles, steps and muddy fields. Alternative Route: Instead of following the official route, you could follow the Hart to Haswell Walkway to Hesleden, from the junction of Easington Road and Hartville Road, walk down Hartville Road towards the railway lines where you will see the notice board for the Hart to Haswell Walkway, this is a popular cycling route and has much better surfaces.
