Hanbury Hall from Pipers Hill

Description

(S/E) Park at Piper's Hill free car park (Grid ref. SO957652): not sign-posted from the road and slightly obscured by trees. Watch out for it on the west side of the B4091 (marked on Explorer map).

Descend towards the pond and head South through woods. Emerging from the woods turn slightly right and through a field (don't feed the horses!), up a hill to Hanbury Parish Church. Walk through the churchyard (take a moment to enjoy the expansive views of rural Worcestershire as this is the best viewpoint of the walk) and out through the main entrance onto the road. Go downhill for a few metres reaching a footpath on the left by which access to the Hanbury estate is gained. Proceed down the grassy slope towards the wooden gate in the distance. When the path forks into two tree-lined avenues, keep to the left one until the main access road to the Hall is reached.

(1) Keeping the small pond ahead to your right, continue across a pathless field to a stile. Cross over and walk on past the Hall. Take a compass bearing of approximately 222 degrees and we'll see just how good your compass skills are! Head for the trees in the distance and if you've taken a good bearing, you'll end up on the left hand side of a small pond. Don't worry if you missed it (I hit the right side having taken a bearing on a cow!), just walk to the left side of the pond and locate the stile just beyond.

(2) Cross over and immediately turn right down another footpath. Continue over a stile until reaching a complex double stile. Don't cross here but turn left and follow the field boundary to a gap in the hedge where a footbridge affords access to the other side of the hedge. Cross over and take another compass bearing of 310 degrees. Resist the temptation to follow the line of the woods. Good compass work will take you past a small pond in a hollow at the top of the hill. From there head down to a metal gate and a wide farm access.

(3) At the bottom of the hill, cross a stile into the farmyard and follow the waymarks on the stiles to the North of Summerhill farm, reaching a bridge over the canal. Here you face a choice: cross a gate with barbed wire on top to gain direct access to the tow-path, or cross the bridge and continue on the footpath.

If crossing the bridge, the footpath continues until it crosses a bridlepath to Walmer farm. Take the footpath from the farm going right, under the railway, back to the canal and cross the canal on the lock gates (handrail provided).

(4) Either way, head North on the tow-path until just after Astwood Lane bridge. Locate a stile leading east across fields. Follow the field boundary across stiles and footbridges until reaching a country lane. Here turn right and then in a few metres find a footpath on the left. Continue roughly Eastwards following the boundary hedges. Once near the end of one field, the path goes through a gap in the hedge, crossing a stream via a concealed footbridge and continuing on the left hand side.

(5) Eventually reach the outward footpath at Piper's Hill and retrace the last few hundred metres back to the car park(S/E).

We did this walk after a period of rainfall. The paths were muddy and very slippery in places. The bridges over the streams as you approach the canal are a little difficult for less agile ramblers. However, the landscape and views are lovely. A walk well worth doing.

Good instructions and well sign posted for much of the walk as, “Hanbury circular walk”.
When it comes to the farm and canal directions could be a little clearer but using the map we made educated guess. FYI at the farm turn right after the cattle grid, then left behind house and barn walk to right hand corner to bridge. We couldn’t find the barbed gate so took the other route, instructions make it sound like a little detour but it is approx half a mile. Basically after bridge walk straight over fields and then when you hit field full of crop turn right and follow the border this will keep the railway line in focus, just past pylon you will come to next tunnel (you will not go past the farm) once under the railway again there is a field full of crops and you need to head in a direction of about 10 o clock, towards large tree in middle and then beyond, this takes you directly to the lock. After that point all plain sailing with directions.
Timing right at 2:30, nice walk for all ages and abilities, with steady climbs in places but nothing onerous or muddy🙂

I arrived rather later than usual in the Hanbury area. about 11:30 and as forecast overcast conditions about 7 to 8 degs C. Chilly indeed.

I could not find the car park at Start, though did later - and to be honest it is easy to find if time is taken. Its on a steep incline in the road and does (as described) lie back almost hidden - so slow down if your coming B4091 Harbours Hill (see map) up the hill.

I started from the car park of Hanbury Hall and made my way walking to 2 via the narrow road outside. Mostly the way markers are good. There are quite a few at each field post pointing the way to different walks - so once again take your time. Quite often there are quite well trodden paths across fields where allowed and a number of signs to ask us to follow the perimeter of the fields. I reached the railway line and onto the canal tow path with ease despite three 'mad' but cute Jack Russells on Summer Hill. They sounded quite brave but only really wanted a password such "good dog" before dispersing back towards the local farm house. It was certainly chilly along the canal wich is the route I took rather than towards Walmer Farm turn. Obviously getting to 4 was easy on this route. The sun really tried it's utmost to join me and did so for a few moments. I always take loads of photos for my "Walking Years" album so any walk I take always takes much longer than the prescribed walking time.

Now, things got a little difficult and I may well have taken a wrong route and ended going via a chicken and sheep farm yard via a narrow path but sign posted, The farmer acknowledged me with a smile as he opened a gate - I have a feeling that that was the route sign I missed. So, I ended up on the B4091 at Sharpway Gate area. Once again I found myself using the now busy B4091 with no foot ways to reach 5 (Car Park Start).

I can tell you once I reached 5(start) I recognised the area immediately. The last time I found myself here was in 1974 (that's right 1974). I worked in marketing at a local factory in Stoke Works down the road and us young 'uns quite often ran away at lunch times to picnic here for our hour's lunch. Memories came running back - happy days - or was it 3 day working weeks (?!!).

I easily found the path at the bottom of the car park with the pool on the left. It is quite narrow and wooded on both side now and the pathway inclines slightly. Then there is a very steep incline up to the Church on top of the hill. Had it been a nice day gthe views would have been splendid but I could still see the Malverns and the other high spots around the area. Through the small car park - look right and there is a gateway in front. Through here and its bowling green flat surface in sheep fields towards the end of my walk at Hanbury Hall.

So it proves that starting at any point on the circle is enjoyable and worth your time

The routes i have walked provided by hike ideas are great. The combination of the written explanation with the route shown on a map in pdf is great!
