Description

(S/E) From the front door of the Bell, turn right. At the road junction, go straight on into Church Lane. Follow the road until you reach the church.

(1) Take a footpath over a stile on the right just before the churchyard wall and cross the field to a double stile and bridge. Walk uphill across the field ahead of you, bearing slightly right. Beyond a stile, cross the next field to a footbridge with woodland away to your right.

Cross the next field to another footbridge, then bear right across a fourth field to a metalled lane. Cross a footbridge directly opposite and bear right to another. Beyond the belt of trees continue uphill, aiming for the farm buildings, where two gates give access to the road.

(2) Turn left and walk into Bletchingdon village. At the village green, cross the B4027 and continue straight on, signposted to Weston-on-the-Green and the church. Pass a nursery school then, when the road bends right, take a footpath through a kissing gate straight ahead.

(3) At the church, turn right and walk out to the road. At the grassy triangle, turn right along the B-road. At a right-hand bend, leave the road and turn left onto a footpath. Turn immediately left through a metal bridle-gate and walk down a narrow field with woodland to your right, passing a pond on your left.

(4) Go through a gateway at the bottom of the field and follow the field edge beyond to a footbridge. After the bridge, turn right, along a small stream with the field on your left. Look out for a path turning right over the stream and between two ponds (they might be dry).

Bear left in the next field to a gateway leading to a short track out to the road. Turn left and walk along the road for 400 yards to the road junction at Diamond Farm.

(5) Opposite the junction, turn right along a short fenced path between a farm track and the farm, then join the track. When the track ends, keep on along the edge of the narrow field ahead, with the buildings and windpump of Frogsnest Farm away to your left.

(6) Cross a footbridge in the far corner of the field and keep straight on, ignoring a path to your right. At the end of the next field, turn right along a farm track. When the track bends right, keep straight on along a field edge with a hedge on your right.

(7) As you approach a farm, go through a gap in the hedge on your right to rejoin the track. When you reach the road, turn left. Bear left at the end of Church Lane to return to the Bell. (S/E)

A pleasant July walk on a hot day, with many types of wild flowers. No spectacular views, but interesting and enjoyable -- thank you!
Navigation hints: at the start of (1) we found it easier to go around the crops in the first couple of fields rather than follow the diagonal paths. At end of (1), there are two stiles rather than gates to get to the road. At (4) just before the ponds (which were not very visible, but definitely there), the path is rather overgrown and crosses the stream via a small wooden bridge at the corner of the field. At the end of (7) the path (according to the GPS) was heavily overgrown and we had to climb the gate and enter a temporary enclosure with an electric fence and horses inside -- maybe there's an easier way?

Hi Alan,
Thank you for this feedback. The ponds might have been dried out... ? Do you have any suggestion to improve the description so people can easily find their way?
Thank you for your time.
Enjoy your walks.

Park on the grass verge at the end of Church Lane near The Bell pub (OX5 2QD). The walk is well signposted. The church at point 3 was open. Very nice. Point 4 was a bit confusing - we couldn't see the two ponds! Had a welcome drink and rest in the pub, a sandwich in the car, then did the other walk - Hampton Gay and Poyle. Easy!
