Description

(S) From Hylton Dene car park next to Hylton Castle, walk south through the children's play park to the main entrance to Hylton Dene, turn left throught the staggered gate and take the right most path which runs alongside Hylton Dene Burn. This will eventually pass Hylton Dene Pond and exit through staggered gates onto Castletown Road by a small car park.

(1) Turn left and continue along Castletown Road, turn left at the junction onto Castletown Way (look to your right for a view of the Northern Spire bridge at this junction).

(2) At the end of Castletown Way, turn right onto North Hylton Road. Cross the road and walk along in front of the bungalows, these will veer away from North Hylton Road, follow this side road. At the end of the bungalows you will see a path, continue on this path.

(3) Turn right onto Redcar Road, continue past the schools onto Maplewood Avenue.

(4) The at the bend in the road where Mulberry Avenue and Elmwood Avenue meet Maplewood Avenue, look to your left and you will see a path. Take this path crossing Marley Potts playing field and then turn right onto Wembley Road and walk around the top of the playing field.

(5) Wembley Road becomes Emsworth Road, just after this, turn left into the recreation area, keep left walking behind Wentbridge and Whitchurch Road (northwest), You will meet a path coming from the left where there is a staggered gate, this path then turns northeast around the end of the trees. Stay on this wider track heading in a northeast direction. You will have farmland on your left. Ignore wider track to your left and take the narrower path continue until you reach Newcastle Road.

(6) Cross Newcastle Road and continue on the track opposite (north), passing under the railway lines. Follow the path along the field edge, this will turn right then left before reaching Moor Lane. Turn righton on to Moor Lane (east).

(7) When you reach Sunderland Road, cross the road and pick up Moor Lane again at the other side and follow this road to Whitburn.

(8) Walk through Whitburn until you see Church Lane on your right, this stretch of path shares the route with the Northern Saints Trail 'Way of Learning' and 'Bede's Way'. Turn right into Church Lane (south).

(9) At the end of Church Lane enter Cornthwaite Park and walk through the park to the Coast Road where the walk ends at the car park.
