Fernilee Reservoir

Very easy walk with a choice of well sign-posted routes through the woods on the north side of the water. Suitable for playing Gruffalo Woods with the kids! It's not worth taking scooters as the uneven ground will undoubtedly tip them off and bikes are not allowed.

Description

(S) Park by the toilet block at the bottom of Goyt's Lane. Take the path on the right down to the reservoir and follow to the dam. This path is muddy in places and too uneven for scooters, though no problem on foot!

(1) Cross the dam admiring the view back up the reservoir and take the signposted path left back up through the woods. You can choose between the 'Woodland Walk' or the 'Waterside Walk' (both well sign-posted). My six year old prefers the waterside walk as there is opportunity to skim stones but also plenty of fallen trees to climb and explore.

(2) On reaching the dam, take the path down to the left and cross the grassy bank of the dam behind the control house, before climbing the road back up to the car park.

Estimated time 1.1/2 hrs at six year old pace, allowing for trips, falls and apple stops.

We enjoyed this walk and appreciated the second short cut as it began to snow heavily. We were confused at one point when the instruction to find a path beside a house was not completely clear.
