Ewelme and Swans Way

A gentle walk across open farmland, with views. Much of the land is set aside for wild flowers, and is quite glorious in the early summer months.

Description

Start : Saint Mary the Virgin Church, Ewelme, Grid ref : SU646913, Postcode : OX10 6HS

(S/E) From Saint Mary the Virgin Church, head South-East along the road (Parson's Lane with the cemetery on your right.) Almost immediately there is a private-looking, unmarked, left fork, following an unmade road uphill, and becoming part of the Chiltern Way. Follow the path for about a kilometre alongside open fields. As you come to a small wooded area, keep to the right, and the path joins a small made road. Turn left.

(1) After a five hundred metres turn right onto a somewhat concealed bridleway across fields. This is Swan's Way. Follow the path South, crossing a farm lane after about half a kilometre. At the lowest point, continue uphill to the left of a hedge, diving into the hedge after about 100 metres. Eventually the path ends at a T junction with another path.

(2) Turn right (North-West) and follow for several hundred metres. Turn right into a very wide farm entrance (Potters Farm), clearly signposted as the Chiltern Way extension. After passing some buildings the path turns slightly Northwards. Continue, passing some large barns, and turning left onto a path by a finger post. When the path crosses a small road, continue ahead on a path slightly to the left. 200 metres later turn right between fields (immediately after a wide metal gate marked private.)

(3) Pass through a gate and turn right onto a small but busy road. About 10 metres before the Ewelme village boundary sign take a small path on the left, heading up the steep bank. The path bends right and ends at a field. Turn right, and in the corner of the field take the path on the right down to the village. Turn right and almost immediately left up a steep-ish hill. At the top of the hill find the starting point at Saint Mary the Virgin Church (S/E)
