Description

(S) From Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, walk down Borough Road until you reach the roundabout.
Turn right on West Lawrence Street and continue walking until you reach the next roundabout.

(1) Turn right again onto Hendon Road. You are now back on the England Coast Path. Continue walking down Hendon Road, crossing another roundabout into Commercial Road. Continue down this road crossing a large roundabout by the Raich Carter Sports Centre.

(2) At the traffic lights turn left down Promenade and continue down under the railway bridge to the seafront. You can take either the promenade through the car park, but you will need to climb to the top of the cliffs via one of the paths further along, the last of which has a viewing platform overlooking Hendon beach and is demarcated with white stones. Alternatively you can take one of the paths along the top of the cliffs.

(3) After the Ocean Road car park, the footpath becomes a track along the top of the cliffs rather than a well-defined footpath, this will eventually become the first stretch of the Durham Heritage Coast Footpath.

(4) Continue walking along the cliffs until the footpath takes a sharp right at Halliwell Banks.

(5) When you reach the railway lines, turn left and then walk underneath the railway line and road through the tunnel. At the other side of the tunnel turn left and walk up the bank, at the top turn right and walk along to Ryhope Green to catch a bus back to the city centre - cross the Green to The Village as more buses run to the city centre.
