(S) From the bridge over Staithes Beck, walk along the High Street towards the harbour. When you reach the harbour, turn right and walk up Church Street.
(1) At the top of Church Street, you will see a sign for the Cleveland Way and the road will end at a stone footpath which turns to a dirt path as it climbs.
(2) At the top you will come to a farm, again the Cleveland Way is clearly signposted 'Runswick Bay', and you will need to turn left at the end of the barn and go through the gate (an alternative route goes straight on). The grass footpath runs between two fields which are fenced. At the end of the field, stop and look back down towards Staithes. To continue the walk, turn right along the cliff tops. The path here is wide continues between the fences. The path then turns southwards and begins to climb.
(3) Go through the gate, there are waymarkers on the gate for the Cleveland Way and England Coast Path. If you took the alternative, direct path, from the barn you will now join up again with the main footpath. This will then head in a southeasterly direction. A stone path leads towards the crest of the hill where you will need to go through another gate. The ground levels off here. Continue until you reach the National Trust sign for Port Mulgrave. There is a bench here if you wish to rest.
(4) Continue until you reach the gate at Port Mulgrave, go through the gate. You will now be on a wider track. There is a path down to the beach on the left if you wish to explore, otherwise continue on the road. You will then reach more cottages and you will see the Cleveland Way sign and information board with information about Port Mulgrave to your left, turn onto this path and go through the gate. The path will run between fences and hedges to another gate. Don't go through the gate, turn right.
(5) Follow the path along the top of the cliffs. This will dip down some steps from where you will get a good view of the remains of the port, then back up the other side. At the top of the steps is another England Coast Path marker. You will pass a National Trust sign for Runswick and then an information board about Runswick Bay. The path turns southwest at this point across the fields. At the end is another National Trust sign for Runswick and a gate, go through the gate onto Lingrow Close.
(6) At the junction next to the Runswick Bay Hotel either cross the road and take the road opposite the hotel (direct to the village)l or turn left into Bank Top Lane and walk down to the village taking the footpath straight ahead at the car park/Cliffemount Hotel. These two routes meet at the bottom of the hill. Continue down to the beach (E).
