Description

(S) From Runswick village, walk along the beach passing the Sailing Club.

(1) Turn right and enter the ravine climb the rocks to the footbridge, then ascend the steps, there are a lot of them. The path will lead southeastwards into a woodland area and loop back to a northeasterly direction.

(2) After a very long climb you will emerge on the cliff tops, there is a bench here if you wish to rest.

(3) Continue to follow the path until you reach a gate, look back for a spectacular view across Runswick Bay. Go through the gate and continue to follow the cliff top path. Pass through a second gate and then a third. Continue up the steps. The path skirts the edge of a field and then turns inland passing behind some houses. Go through the large gate and turn back on your self and walk in front of the houses, walk past the farm watching out for the post with the England Coast Path marker on it and into Kettleness.

(4) When the path joins the road, bear left and leave the road again, this is clearly signposted Clevland Way. Continue on through a gate, the path runs along the edge of a field, you will then come to a gate and stile.

(5) Continue until you reach a second stile. There is also a signpost here. Cross the stile and go up the steps. Continue on over another stile,

(6) Continue following the path until you reach a wooded area, walk down the steps which are a mix of wooden and stone steps. When the path levels out at the bottom, look back to see the entrance of a disused tunnel. The path opens out here onto a wider gravel path following the old train tracks. You should be able to see Whitby in the distance.

(7) You will enter a wooded area, there are smaller paths leading in both directions, but stay on the wide track.

(8) The track will end at a private residence, take the narrow footpath and steps to the left towards the car park. Walk through the car park to Sandsend Beck (E).
