Easton in Gordano, circular walk around Portbury and Summerhouse Woods

This is a pleasant two-mile walk that takes in a variety of hills and woods. There are still quite a few stiles to climb so not as accessible as some walks at the moment.

Description

(S/E) Start at the entrance to Summerhouse Woods (locally known as the Bottoms) The first part of the walk involves walking along the busy A369 for around 300m. There is a wide verge and you need to walk along until you get to the traffic lights at the junction to the village of Pill and Easton in Gordano. You should now see a footpath sign that leads up a sloped track, opposite to the way you have just been walking, to a farm gate with a stile on the right hand side, into a field.

(1) Once in the field head turn sharp right and head diagonally upwards towards a double stile in the hedge, continue straight across this stile to the next double stile into a small area between two fields and again cross another stile into the field beyond.

Cross this field skirting the corner of the wood to arrive at a triple stile in the hedge opposite.

Take the stile on the left and follow the hedge for 200m. Climb the stile in the corner of the field to stay on the left of the property and eventually you will come through a farm gate onto Failand lane.

(2) Turn left up the lane (single track road) for about 400m. (Do not turn left into Coombe Lane). When you are almost at the top of the hill, there should be a wall on your right and a footpath coming from that side, take the footpath on the left opposite through a gate.

(3) Head straight across this field to a gate opposite. This will take you across a private driveway to a gate opposite, again go straight across this field to another gate that will lead you across a stream. Follow this path as it winds around until you come out by some houses.

(4) Before you reach the houses and the road, on your left now there is another path that will take you across a stream into the field. Once across this stream take a sharp left and walk along the path that follows the stream.

Keep following this path through the next field, then through a track to the next field, this part of the path is always very muddy but does improve as the field widens again. Head through a double gate and again continue straight ignoring the path to the left to Coombe Lane and continue with the wood now to your left until you meet the kissing gate into the woods.

Go through the kissing gate and turn sharp right. Continue along with the stream on your left. Stay on this path straight ahead until you reach the end of the woods where the path will turn and head up a slope to the left onto the A369 where you started your walk. (S/E)

This was a lovely walk partly through woods. The primroses, wood anaeomies, celandines were a carpet of colour. Still a bit muddy in places. bluebells are on their way, so a visit soon would be good for the blue carpet! Great walk for people not wishing to climb too much. some stiles a bit high to get over. Paked very near to the large roundabout on the road to port bury and walked up the side of the main road to reach the path.
