Craigmonie Woods

Description

Start: Drumnadrochit Tourist Information car park. (IV63 6TY) Grid ref. NH 50781 29916

(S/E) From Drumnadrochit Tourist Information car park, head right (South) along the A82.

Take the first right (West) onto Pitkerrald Road. You will be following way markers for the Affric Kintail Way at first.

(1) Turn left (South West) at a fork 200m along. The road soon becomes a rougher track and enters Craigmonie Woods.

(2) Almost immediately on entering the woods, turn right (North East) onto a narrow trail which passes a giant redwood tree.

From the tree head North, following the way markers with the red and green stripes.

As you walk up the trail for the next 700m you should keep right at any forks, aiming to stay on the path closest to the edge of the woods. You are following the Affric Kintail Way.

(3) After approx 1.4km, you will reach a fork where you turn left (East) to come off the Affric Kintail Way.

The landscape soon opens up with fields to your right-hand side. For the next 1.5km there will be other path options, but always choose the one which keeps the field close to your right.

(4) After 1.5km the path emerges onto a wider track. Turn right (South) and walk along the track.

(5) When you reach a gate at the entrance (and exit) of Balmacaan Woods, go through the gate then turn right (South West) and follow this track as it zig zags down to a single track road.

(6) Turn right (South West) onto the road - signposted ‘Dhivach’ on a 3-way directional post.

Stay on the road for 1.5km as it crosses the River Coiltie and winds it’s way steadily uphill to Divach Falls car park.

(7) Go through the gate in the car park, as directed by the signpost 'Dhivach Falls 300m'.

(8) Follow the pleasant woodland path down to Divach Falls viewpoint.

Retrace your steps to the car park then back down the single track road to the 3-way directional post (6). This time continue ahead (North East) in the direction of Drumnadrochit.

(9) Stay on this residential street - Balmacaan Road - for 1.3km to reach the A82.

Turn left (North West) and walk along the roadside pavement to return to Drumnadrochit Tourist Information car park (S/E)
