River Ribble

Description

Start : Edisford Road car park opposite Roefield Sport Centre along B6243. (BB7 3LA)

(S/E) Leave the car park and head right (West) along Edisford Rd (B6243) past the Spar shop. After passing the Spar shop car park take the path left (North) as it gently climbs via a series of gates. Pass through the gate and continue along a tree-lined path (around 620m).

(:1) Immediately after passing through the gate turn right (East) down the slope to a gate in the corner of the field. Pass through the gate and turn sharply left (North) diagonally up the slope passing through another gate. Follow the path North-West-North down some steps and along the path to a river (River Ribble). At the river, head right (North-East) beside the river and take steps up to Waddington Road (B6478). Cross the road to head briefly right (South) along it.

(2) Take the gated path left (North-West) into Brungerley Park in order to follow the 'Ribble Way' which has been diverted away from the riverbank in parts due to erosion. Keep to the tarmac path as it ascends the slope following yellow diversion signs.

Take the steps left (North) down the slope and continue to follow the path via the 'Otter' sculpture down to the river bank. After passing through the gate follow the 'Ribble Way' footpath initially North-East as it follows the curve in the river. Climb the stone steps which lead to the road at West Bradford bridge.

(3) At the road cross over to a gate on the other side. Use the gate to rejoin the footpath as it mostly follows the riverbank before it enters the woodland at end of this section (Around 1.3Km). Pass through a gate and continue West towards the road. Pass through the gate and descend the steps to Ribble Lane. Turn left (North-West) and carefully follow the road which does not have a footpath.

(4) Cross over the bridge and follow the road towards the T-junction at the bungalow. At the T-junction turn left (West), sign posted to Waddington and West Bradford. Then turn left again (South) down Ribble Avene and walk past the houses to a path at the bottom of the road.

(5) At the bottom of the path pass through the gate and turn right (West) to resume the walk along the riverbank (Around 1.8Km). Cross footbridge and continue West along well-defined track. Pass through the gate beside the sewage works and continue on the path West beside the river.

(6) When you get to a road, pass through the wall and turn left (South) briefly along Clitheroe Rd. Just before crossing the bridge over the river, take the steps right on the North side of the road down into the field. The path is initially close to the river before heading to the North-West corner of the field. Pass through the gateway, and head briefly North.

(7) Pass through the second gate and follow the path as it curves left (West) then South-West via stiles. Cross a wooden bridge and enter the field via a stile. The path curves to the left (South-West) corner of the field on the opposite boundary. Cross the stile and head South up the slope towards farm buildings. The route passes around the South side of the farm and leads to Clitheroe Rd (B6478).

(8) Briefly take Waddington Rd right (North). After passing through the gate follow the good quality clearly signposted path left initially South-West through the grounds of Waddow Hall. Follow the footpath sign as the path continues South-West before curving West to join Edisford Rd.

(9) Turn left (South) onto Edisford Rd and carefully, no footpath, follow it to find a footpath left to go down to the river again.

(10) Cross the bridge over River Ribble and turn right (South) on to the footpath beside the river. When the clear path ends head towards the road between the swimming pool and tennis buildings which leads back to the start. (S/E)
