The Weir

Description

(S/E) Join the footpath which starts at Hawksley Gardens and turn left. Continue all the way down this footpath until you see a public bridleway sign and take a right. Follow the path forward and you will shortly be met with a nice open view overlooking a field where sometimes horses roam.

Keep walking forward and very soon you will be on the outer left-hand side of Clifton Woods (there is an information board here).

Keep to the left side so you are just skirting the woods and carry on forward. Take a left to start making your way down a stony descent.

(1) When you reach the bottom, bear left towards the public bridleway. You will now be on a large path used by both walkers and cars so do take care. Turn right to follow the path and you will be surrounded by an open stretch of fields and lovely views of the area.

(2) Follow the path round and eventually you will join another public bridleway which bears right. Continue forward and eventually you will notice the path will start to curve left. After the slight curve you need to bear right and opposite you is the entrance to the Weir (there are a few noticeboards about fishing etc).

(3) Follow the entrance to the Weir and you will be on a pebbled piece of land with great views of the River Trent. PLEASE BE CAREFUL HERE AS THE TIDE CAN COME RIGHT IN, ESPECIALLY AFTER RAIN. You can see some of Beeston to your right.

Now you've had a glimpse of the Weir, head back out of the entrance and turn left. As you walk forward, you may still be able to catch sightings of the River Trent to your left. You will shortly be at the bottom of Clifton Grove where you need to turn left.

Curve round the path and you will now meet a stony upward hill which is a little steep.

(4) When you reach the top of the hill you will be on Holgate (road) Look behind you to catch a view of the grand Clifton Hall (private land) and St. Mary's Church. Carry on forward along Holgate and bear right slightly to reach Nethergate.

Turn right again to leave Nethergate and arrive on Yew Tree Lane where you will see a public bridleway sign. Continue forward on Yew Tree Lane and you will shortly be joining a stony path which will take you past Home Farm. You may see horses to your left at first and then again to your right as you venture further up the path (horses are in an enclosed area). Very soon you will arrive back at Hawksley Gardens where you started the walk. (S/E)

Enjoyed the walk, easy, although very muddy at the start because of the wet weather and time of year. Nice clear instructions. Will do again in better weather
