(S) Coming out of Chessell Pottery, carefully walk along the lane in a southerly direction, joining the B3399 for just a couple of minutes before footpaths S21 and S25 cross the road. Take the left footpath S25 and begin to climb up Chessell Down.
(1) Not exactly clear, but near the summit of the Down, turn sharp right towards ancient earthworks and then veer left on to BS88, descending the Down towards The Longstone. As this becomes National Trust land, signpost numbering is not always in evidence.
(2) Once having reached the Longstone, no doubt with the obligatory photo, take a path BS85, as it meanders along Mottistone Common. This is a level path with stunning views seaward, so if you appear to be descending, it is wrong.
At the end of the Common, where the National Trust Land finishes, go through a gate and almost immediately on your left look for footpath BS45, which quickly descends through woodland, and then a couple of fields, down to Hulverstone, at the end of which is the welcome sight of The Sun. (E)
