Cadouin Abbey circuit

A beautiful trail through the woods, overlooking the abbey and the cloister of Cadouin (built in the 12ht, 15th and 16th centuries). One of the many hikes in the forest of Bessède in the heart of the Périgord Noir.

Description

Park at the Abbey opposite the town hall annex (S/F) Leave the village by the D25. Shortly before the retirement home, turn right, and embark on a narrow path that starts at the foot of an electrical transformer. A solid uphill stretch through the undergrowth gets us in good shape for the rest of the circuit, take care on the very narrow path that requires mountain bikers to carry their bikes. Quickly reach the Gavachoux.

(1) Take a trail through the underwood to Saint Blanchot. Then take the small road on the left that leads to marker 241 at the junction. Turn right and continue to point 246.

(2) Use the right track to cover a good 2 km until you reach Bretoux farm. One hundred metres after the farm, reach the D54 and follow it on the left. At first intersection, turn right towards a large farm, continue on the road to find an unmarked trail 150 m further on in a bend that runs flat for 2 km through the woods, to get out onto the D2.

(3) Cross the road to take the small road opposite that leads to the Soulety farm. Fifty metres before this one, head up to the right to the water tank. Use the R track (west) which descends 600 m to a small road. Cross it and take a side trail that leads to the crossroads of four paths after 1 kilometre’s walk.

(4) Turn right, go 1 km downhill to find the marker 187, turn immediately right on a track that brings you to a small road to a treatment plant. Take the road on your left and cross the village of Cadouin to the Abbey (S/F).

We haven't actually done this walk yet but as regularly stay near Vezac, hopefully it won't be too long until we can try it out. The route and description sound straightforward and easy to follow and we do know the area so we expect to enjoy it very much

Had a great walk, clearly signposted and enjoyable. Walked from buisson to the start at cadouin which added a few more km and made it more challenging (overall 18km ish)
