Blackhall Rocks Circular

This circular walk encompasses Blackhall Rocks Nature Reserve and Cross Gill and provides opportunties to explore Blackhall Rocks beach with its caves. The cliffe top walk allows spectacular views of the Durham Coast.

Description

(S/E) From the parking area just under the railway bridge take the wide track. This will run parallel to the railway lines, then bend to the right and then the left until you reach the top of Blue House Gill.

(1) At Blue House Gill, turn right (northeast) onto the Durham Coastal Path and walk along the top of Blue House Gill Towards the coast.

(2) At the end of Blue House Gill you will see steps down to the beach, you can explore the beach if you wish, and can opt to walk along the beach itself to (3), otherwise follow the path around to your right (sourtheast) and continue along the top of the cliffs.

(3) When you reach the end of the tarmac road take the steps down to the beach. Once you have explored the beach return to the top of the steps. Continue to follow the Durham Coastal Path (southeast) taking the left hand fork and following the cliff tops. The path will turn southwards.

(4) If you wish to end the walk here, turn right and follow the path back to the car park, otherwise continue to follow the footpath south along the cliff tops.

(5) If you wish to shorten the walk then turn right and follow the path across the path to the railway lines and turn right back to the car park. To explore Cross Gill continue in a southeast direction. The footpath will loop back on itself in a northwest direction, then will turn left down a set of steps. Cross Cross Gill (check out the view down to the sea) and then take the steps back up at the other side, turning left at the top walking along the top of Cross Gill. The footpath with then turn sharply right at Limekiln Gill.

(6) On reaching the paved road at the railway lines, turn right and walk around the fenced compound. Follow the footpath which runs parallel to the railway lines. Continue until you reach a tunnel under the railway lines, turn right (northeast) and follow the path back to the car park (S/E).

Useful Information

Transport: Park at either the small parking area just under the railway bridge or in the main car park by the picnic area. Buses from Hartlepool and Peterlee stop on the Coast Road (services 23, 24 and 206).

Facilities: There are no facilities at Blackhall Rocks but there is a picnic area should you wish to bring a picnic. There is a convenience store and cafe at the junction before the railway bridge. There is also a new cafe/toilets just down the coast at Crimdon Dene.

Accessibility: The entire walk is not accessible, there are many steps to the beach and down to Cross Gill. There is however a stretch of accessible footpath outlined on the leaflet below.

Safety: There are number of access points to the beach, please use one of the maintained ones as there are many sheer drops off the cliffs. Exercise caution when exploring caves.
