Approaching Rail Crossing

Description

(S/E) From Bickerstaffe Park North-West corner, take Intake Lane South-East in Bickerstaffe Village. The pedestrian footpath is not available for a third of this section so take care to face any on coming traffic.
When you reach the junction with Ben Lane, turn right (South-West) along Ben Lane. Continue to follow Ben Lane as it turns right (North-West).

(1) At the junction with Coach Road, turn sharp left (South) onto Coach Road and follow it as it passes over the rail track. At Dairy Farm Road junction, turn right (South-West) through the gate to continue along a farm track.

(2) Towards the end of it, turn right (North-West) to take the track beside Wild Goose Slack.

(3) Just after Wild Goose Slack, turn left (West) along a farm track crossing a brook.

(4) At the end of the track, turn right (North) along the path crossing over the rail track. Here you can get some good views East on the bridge to Winter Hill and Billinge Hill. Upon reaching the road beside the lake turn left (West) at Newbridge Farm.

(5) Reach Stoppage Lane where you turn briefly right (North).

(6) Immediately after the entrance to sewage works turn left (West) to take the footpath along the southern edge of the field. Cross the footbridge and pass by Voces Farm buildings.

(7) Having passed Voces Farm follow the track curving North-West onto the footpath along the Western side of the field boundary. Join Back Lane and follow it North-West-North to New Way road.

(8) Turn right (East) along New Way. Then turn left (North) along a farm track, Voces Lane.

(9) Turn right (East) along Mercers Lane when you reach it.

(10) Then, take the footpath initially left (North) behind Ox Hey Farm and follow it as it bends North-East.

(11) Carry straight on until you reach Little Wood where you turn right (South-East) taking the footpath beside the woodland. Turn left (North-East) onto Hall Lane and follow it past Bickerstaffe Hall back to the start in Bickerstaffe Village. (S/E)

Enjoyed the walk on a clear day and a dry track. Yes, it’s a flat walk but good exercise nonetheless. The walk can be easily extended by a mile or so by starting and finishing at one of the pubs on the A570; either The Sandpiper or the Stanley Gate. There’s a track at the side of the former, taking walkers across the M58 and through to Bickerstaffe. Good excuse for a couple of pints on finishing the walk. Thanks
