St Paul's to Leam Lane - Bede's Way Walk

Bede's way is a walk linking the twin monastic sites of St Paul's in Jarrow and St Peter's at Monkwearmouth in Sunderland. The walk is split into 6 easily walked sections which can be walked individually or all together. So why not follow in the footsteps of pilgrims and explore the North East's religious heritage. This the 1rst section begins at St Paul's and follows the River Don.

Description

(S) From St Paul's Church cross Chruch Bank road and follow the paved footpath marked as a cycle path.
At the mosaic in the pavement, take the left-hand path and follow this under Straker Street and continue to the point where the metro line crosses the A19.

(1) Walk under the metro line bridge and turn left.
Keep your left and cross the River Don, then bear right and walk under the A19 to Jarrow Cemetery. Follow the footpath around to the right, the River Don should now be on your right.

(2) Cross Cemetery Road bearing right and then left into the cycle way. Follow this path until you reach a junction in the path, turn left and cross the River Don footbridge. Bear right.
Follow the River Don footpath this rounds a corner to the left. You will then see a footbridge on your right.

(3) Cross this footbridge and turn left following the River Don past Primrose Nature Reserve to the junction with Roman Road and Leam Lane. This section ends at the Robin Hood pub (now Vespa Italian Bar). (E)

Transport: There is parking at Jarrow Hall if you are visiting this attraction and also in Slake Road behind St Paul's. The Go Northeast Crusader 27 service from Heworth Interchange stops outside St Paul's.
