Description

(S/E) From the car park, go left along the lane and follow the stony track along the riverside to Shalfleet Quay – here there is a National Trust information board at a boatyard.

(1) Retrace your steps passing the mill and continue to the main road by The New Inn. Turn right and carefully cross the road at St Michael the Archangel Church. Go through a wooden gate and take the small path to the right as it follows the edge of the church and then descends stone steps at a lane. Turn right and follow the lane left. The lane joins Withyfield.

(2) Go right passing Yaffles. At a T- junction go left. Pass Shalfleet Village Stores and note the gipsy caravans in the rear yard. The road continues right and then left as it leaves the village.

(3) After 100 yards turn right into woodlands on footpath S15 towards Ningwood. Keep left at a path junction and cross a stile into a field. Go half right across the field passing a telegraph post and a gate with a stile. Continue to reach a stile on the left of a field gate. Follow the path left and then right to reach a stile by a lane at Atkies Farm.

(4) Go left along the lane and then right on bridleway S16 towards Newbridge.

(5) At Dodpitts Lane, go left. Take care along the lane, facing the oncoming traffic. Take the footway at Newbridge and pass houses at Westway and Shalfleet Parish Help Centre. Pass the entrance to the Orchards Caravan Park and follow the road right and then left and past two thatched cottages.

(6) Turn left onto footpath S35 towards Shalfleet through a kissing gate. Continue on the field path and go through a gate. Go up a short hill and cross a stile into a lane. Continue straight on to reach Homestead Farm. Continue on the concrete path passing Homestead Cottage.

(7) Cross a stile and follow the footpath towards Shalfleet. Cross a field and exit by a gate gap. Cross over a field to find a stile behind bramble. Cross the footbridge and stile. Keep to the right of a field and cross another stile and footbridge. Continue on the footpath to reach a stile leading into an enclosed path. Cross a stile, now with a river on the right. Continue on the riverside path to reach a stile and footbridge to the right of houses. Follow the path by a seat and continue to the left of a house to reach a lane by the church and a one bar gate.

(8) Follow the lane right and emerge from Church Lane at the main road. Cross the road at the traffic lights and continue along Mill Road for 200 yards to reach the car park.(S/E)
