Path close to Ambresbury Banks
The path along Deer Sanctuary with views over wildlife
Path in Birch Wood

Description

Start : Piercing Hill car park. (CM16 7JW) Grid ref. TQ 447 999

(S/E) Head to gate n°34 next to the car park and follow the way along properties and fences for 200 metres.

(1) At the junction, bear right, cross a small gate after 250 metres before you reach another junction, bear left (South-West) following the yellow arrow and continue this section of Epping Forest Centenary Walk.

(2) Notice that on your way, you can make a small detour on your right if you want to discover and learn more about Ambresbury Banks (from 500 BC) used as animal folds in times of attack from other tribes or as look-out posts and boundary markers. After 1 Km, continue straight ahead when you reach a junction signpost with a yellow arrow. Past gate n°29 "Long Running", you reach Jack's Hill car park and B172.

(3) Cross over the road, go across the second car park heading to the green metallic barrier (gate n°53 Ditches Ride) in front of you. Continue the main path for 600 metres until you reach a yellow arrow next to beautiful beech trees.

(4) Follow this path on your left with yellow arrows. continue straight at the next junction before the path goes along the stream.

(5) The yellow arrow path leads to a T-junction (can be very muddy during wet conditions!) in front of a fence. Bear left at the right angle. Go slightly up the path which goes along Deer Sanctuary. If you are lucky you could admire wildlife! Continue along the fence until you reach a gate, go through it and walk the driveway going past Birch Hall Farm. You finally reach Coppice Row next to West Lodge.

(6) Cross over the road heading to the yellow arrow in front of you. Avoid a fallen tree before you join a larger path. Bear left and continue for 500 metres before you reach Genesis Slade car park.

(7) Ignore the car park on your left and bear right. Follow the main path for half a mile which joins the first junction of the walk next to wooden fences. Go straight ahead walking along these fences to go back to Piercing Hill car park.(S/E)

Only my second Visorando walk and although it was very pleasant, the instructions were nothing like as precise as the previous walk and we ended up missing a small section.

It was excellent. Saw loads of deer both in the sanctuary and roaming free. Also saw various birds including Jays. Easy to follow and good on timing. Plenty of fallen trees to sit on for a picnic.
