Ardingly Reservoir

Description

Start : Ardingly Reservoir Car Park West Sussex (RH17 6SQ) Os Grid ref. TQ 335 287

(S/E) Use the public free car park and starts at the bottom of the reservoir, then head up a slight slope following the path North-East (keeping the reservoir to your left) for about half a mile going through a kissing gate till you see a stile on your right.

(1) Climb over the stile and head up through a field (North-East). When you get to the end (around 400m) continue to follow a lane (Church Lane) through some houses for around 600m until you reach Saint Peter church at the road junction with Street Lane.

(2) Turn right for a few steps on Street Lane then take the footpath sign on the left; for a short while until you see the Ardingly showground. Turn left (North-West) then right (North) and continue along a road keeping the showground on your right for about 500 yards.

(3) The road forks off to the right but carries straight on a path for around 350m, ignoring ways coming from left and right until you reach a metal field gate and a lane (Tillinghurst Lane).

(4) Turn left (West) heading downhill past a duck pond and a farm on your left. Keep going a few more steps with a barn in front. Walk down and through two fields and a small wood before you reach a 3rd field with a memorial bench after a large barn at Tillinghurst Farm.

Take the path left which goes across the field directly to a footbridge following the green broken footpath marker and not hug the side of the field. Cross the footbridge over the reservoir. Then on the other side follows the footpath straight on until you see a wooden gate.

(5) Do not enter but take the path on your right heading uphill through the woods for about a quarter of a mile to the road. Turn left (South) into Paddockhurst Lane. Where it forks, follow Mill Lane and the sign towards Balcome for a short while you’ll then see Edmond's Farm in front of you.

(6) Take the bridle path on the left through a metal gate. Keep right with the trees on your right until you reach a wooden gate.

(7) Go through, turn left (South-East) keeping the reservoir on your right. Follow the path for about a mile and you'll arrive at Balcombe Lane. There, turn right (South-East) and continue over the bridge.

(8) Right after the bridge, you'll see a path on the right, take it and keep the reservoir on your right. Follow this for about a mile and then, you’ll come to the kissing gate at the original start of the walk. (1) Go through it and follow back to the reservoir car park (S/E)

I spotted a typo in my message repeated in your quote -should be Tillinghurst Farm.

If you're going to update the route it might also be worth correcting the map:
1. just before point 3 the route goes across the field directly to the Foot bridge (FB) - following the green broken footpath marker and not hug the side of the field.
2. on the other side of the foot bridge it follows the foot path straight on, not via the dog leg currently down on the map

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to give this feedback. I am going to see with the author how we could improve the description with your suggestions regarding the "memorial bench being in the third field after the large barn at Tillhurst Farm."

Enjoy your walks

Nice short walk around Ardingly and the reservoir - with a few minor ups and downs.

The route is easily followed with basic map reading skills, we didn't even bother with the instructions although reading them post the walk I agree with the comment about the memorial bench being in the third field after the large barn at Tillinghurst Farm.

On the day of our walk, (Sunday) there was a tea/coffee van open on the South of England showground - shown on the map and only a few metres off the route.

The memorial bench is missing from the route, making it impossible for us to continue with confidence. We chose to turn back rather than risk getting lost for hours.

Lovely walk but confusing at point 2. Description sounds as though the memorial bench is in the first field past the barn when in fact you walk through two fields and find the bench in the third field. Apart from that, the instructions were very clear and really enjoyed the walk.

The published route steps were very poor and if it was not for Google maps and GPS we would not have completed it. Virtually no indication of distances between way marks or things to look out for to help you along.

We really enjoyed the walk but found section 2 confusing. We ended up retracing our steps and walking across fields to try and find the metal gate and memorial bench. We are not expert walkers. The instructions say "continue taking the path until you reach the edge of a field. Immediately you will see a memorial seat to the left".

We did find the correct route. You stay on the path but actually have to walk down and through two fields and a small wood before you reach the field and bench mentioned. Maybe the description could be altered to reflect this.

We are only submitting to help others and would recommend this walk to others. Such a beautiful area.

We used the map rather than the description which was great and enabled us to join there walk where we wanted and make some alterations of our own.
